Mila Kunis never forgets us

Kunis on playing the straight man/woman.

While Jason Segal improvised lines about pop culture phenomena like Flava of Love, Mila Kunis found herself repeating many of the same straight lines take after take. She seems to be Forgetting Sarah Marshall's straight man, the woman who can take the hero's mind off his celebrity ex. Relating past disasters over beers, Kunis proves her character is an independent woman by refusing to let the man dote on her.

CraveOnline: Doting really is a turn off, isn't it?

Mila Kunis: Oh, I think it’s absolutely disgusting. I do think it’s a turnoff because people have to be independent. You have to be your own person so I do think that it is a turnoff.

CraveOnline: It's hard to resist doing nice things though.

Mila Kunis: Yeah, but being a gentleman and being chivalrous is not the same as doting. I’m still like “aww” if my boyfriend opens the door. I’m like, “That’s so cute.” But I don’t need everything done for me. Don’t get me wrong. If I come home and I’m tired and there’s dinner on the table, that’s okay. But if I’m thirsty, I have feet, I have legs. Thank God they’re all working. I can get things for myself.

CraveOnline: Is your character the girl who dates the bad guys and tries to change them?

Mila Kunis: She dated one bad guy and then I don’t think she’s looking for anything. She lives in Hawaii, she broke up with her boyfriend, she stayed in Hawaii and then she meets Jason’s character. I don’t think either one of them are looking for love in any type of matter, and I think they just accidentally bond over the same thing where they both didn’t know who they were during their relationships. And I think it’s a very funny relationship that these two have because it’s like over a five day week so their love sparks really fast. I wouldn’t say she’s looking for the right love. I just don’t think she’s looking for anything.

CraveOnline: Do you do anything wild like hanging from a cliff or fighting a bore?

Mila Kunis: This is a loaded question because I don’t but I did accidentally. No, I don’t technically have to do anything physical in this movie other than tread water. And we’re in this ocean and to get to this water I had to take a jet ski. When I got off the jet ski, jet ski and I collided and I ripped my neck off. This whole part is all makeup. That’s about as exciting as that story got but none of this is for the movie. This is just my own stupidity getting to set. So no, but while Jason is hanging off the cliff, I’m treading water. That’s about as dramatic as that got.

CraveOnline: Are you all right?

Mila Kunis: Oh yeah, totally. I didn’t know I did anything. I got out of the water and they were like, “What is on your neck?” It’s like blood, but it healed really well. I’m telling you, Neosporin, A-okay.

CraveOnline: We couldn't see the angry faces you were making because the shot was over your shoulder. What are the angry faces? Do you get that in real life?

Mila Kunis: I hope I’m making faces for the movie. I came home last night because we did this yesterday and I asked my boyfriend, “Do I naturally have an angry face?” And he goes, “Yeah, sometimes.” So I hope it’s not true and I hope he’s f*cking with me. I don’t know.

CraveOnline: Just try to describe it in a way that translates to print.

Mila Kunis: No, because if I make it, I’m going to make a semi-angry face so I wouldn’t know. I hope I don’t have an angry face. It’s very likely that I might. I don’t know anything.

CraveOnline: How did you come to this movie?

Mila Kunis: I don’t have a clue. Someone f*cked up somewhere is what happened. No, about nine months ago I got a call to do a table read for the script. And I was like, “Okay” and it was one of those table reads where a bunch of actors get together and you just hear the script out loud to see if it’s going to be made and if it is, by who and that type of deal. It was for Judd [Apatow] and I met with Judd and Shauna [Robertson] previously and I’ve always wanted to work with them so this came along and I was like, “Yeah, of course I’ll do the table read.” And then four months after that, they called me and they were like, “Come in, we want to talk to you.” And I was like okay. So I came in, they said the movie’s getting made and we really want you to be a part of it and I was like, “Hell yeah, score!” That’s about it. So I really don’t know why I’m here.

CraveOnline: Have you shot your side of this scene already?

Mila Kunis: All yesterday. Yesterday was my coverage of it.

CraveOnline: What were your favorite things about Hawaii?

Mila Kunis: Are you kidding me? First off, where do I begin? It’s Hawaii. I currently live in LA in the midst of West Hollywood so my backyard is cars and dog poop and smog. My backyard in Hawaii was literally the ocean. So to wake up every morning and to have a cup of coffee, and to get to set I had to walk on the beach. Okay, life could be so much worse. The people were great. I learned to surf. I was around amazing crew, amazing cast. I have nothing negative to say about Hawaii. I want to move there so bad right now you don’t even understand. After being there for two months, I miss the beach. I’ve never been a big beach lover whatsoever. I’ve never been a surfer. I currently own a surfboard. I’ve driven a jet ski. I’m not very adventurous. I’m a huge klutz. I will fall, I will trip, that’s kind of what I do. So in this whole vacation, I opened up my mind. It was so great. I took hikes, I did this. It was so amazing.

CraveOnline: How have you taken to surfing?

Mila Kunis: Well, I don’t want to brag, however I can stand. That’s about it. That’s my big move. I can stand though. Let me just tell you. I didn’t think I could either. Yes, you can. Yes, you can. Because I have two left feet and if I can stand, so can anybody. And then we went on the water kayaks, the ocean kayaks where you kind of ride waves in kayaks. That was crazy fun. You flip, it’s rad and there’s turtles everywhere. I don’t even know where to begin. I want to go back to Hawaii. I want to kind of transport everybody that I love in LA to Hawaii and live there. Like my mom, my dad, my boyfriend, my dogs, my best friends and just be like click. Like open up a commune.

CraveOnline: What's coming up on Family Guy?

Mila Kunis: Oh Jesus, really? Hold on. I can’t remember. Family Guy you do, I did it Thursday and I did five episodes. Half the time you just rattle things off. I can’t remember. I’m sure there are though. There’s some really, really funny stuff this year. Really stupid. Like obnoxious. But I guess in two years you’ll see it. Because I think we’re a year ahead, I’m not quite sure. I’m recording now but what I’m recording now is for two years from now I assume.

CraveOnline: What's your favorite scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall?

Mila Kunis: It was a scene that Jack McBrayer, who’s in the movie, who plays Kenny the Page in 30 Rock who I think is one of the most brilliant comedians, he is so f*cking funny. Him and his wife play this young Mormon couple checking into the hotel and I’m checking them in. You are going to die. Without giving too much away, they’re Mormons, they’re waiting to have sex. She’s really horny and he’s confused and stuff, so she starts kind of hugging him sexually and he’s like, “Honey, what’s gotten into you?” She goes, “Well, not you.” Literally, for a good 12, 15 minutes, I could not stop laughing. That’s my favorite scene only because I was in hysterics. You know when you laugh, you cry. That’s where I was. I was in hysterical laughter. He is hysterical in this. I’m like, “You’ve got to promote Jack McBrayer.” He is brilliant in this movie. Just absolutely brilliant. Just so funny.

CraveOnline: Is it a small part?

Mila Kunis: No, he’s like throughout the whole film in New York. He’s like the guest who checks in when Jason’s checking in and they keep running into each other and they’re both having relationship issues. Might be a little different issues but he’s so funny in this. It’s just so great.

CraveOnline: You had to collect yourself after a take today. How do you do that when you crack up?

Mila Kunis: I don’t get thrown by a curveball of a new line. I get thrown by obscure random crap. Chances are the actor will break himself. Like when things don’t make sense and you say them, you’re both going to laugh. How do you? I don’t know, you just close your eyes and you go forth. Half the time I don’t. I’m one of those people who enjoys laughing and I know I’m not supposed to but I actually really like the feeling of laughter. So I’m like hahahahaha. I excuse it on my character. I’m like, “My character would laugh.” I don’t know if they’re buying it though.

CraveOnline: Do you have scenes with Kristen?

Mila Kunis: Yeah, Kristin and I have a couple scenes together. They’re really funny. We have a huge dinner scene where it’s Jason and I and Krist3n and Russell [Brand]. Then there’s a couple stuff at the hotel.

CraveOnline: Are you enjoying being R rated?

Mila Kunis: It’s semi-R rated. Apparently I curse a lot. I learned this in this production, so as R-rated as this is, you gotta do some clean. I didn’t know I had like a sailor’s mouth and I do.

CraveOnline: So it’s difficult to do the TV version?

Mila Kunis: Maybe. We do both takes. You do a clean take and a regular take. Yeah, my dad’s not going to be proud but I do. I don’t know why. A lady’s not supposed to curse. I stopped being a lady.
