Bargain Bin: Superman Returns

The Man of Steel Returns on Blu Ray and for cheap!

By Aaron Seaney
Time to get your Super fix in Super good quality!

Product: Superman Returns (Blu Ray DVD)
Price: 16.99 used

So I have never really hidden my deep love for the character Superman, I mean the dude is amazing! He is all your favorite superheroes rolled into one, and the man never gives up even when he finally faces a challenge. I don’t care what they naysayers say who are like “he’s too good!” No screw that noise, he is the man. With that being said and with all my biasedness aside I must say that I loved Superman Returns, all the fan boys who didn’t like Bryan Singers work can shut the hell up, because honestly he did a fantastic job with the exception of one scene, I know we could have all done without the stalker scene but hey, no one is perfect.

Anyways, with the amazing special effects that this movie had, it makes perfect sense to see it in its ultimate best quality, you can see every little detail as Superman catches the plan inches from the ground at the stadium. You can see the sweat dripping from his forehead as Luthor literally stabs him in the back, and you can feel every inch of hatred in his voice as he says “now fly”, creating the ultimate Superman experience for any fan, or movie lover alike.

So for 16.99 I say if you have a blu ray player, then this is a must own for you, I mean why settle for anything less than perfect, for the perfect Superhero?

I think it is unfair to compare batman and superman as reboots to the franchise. Because when people went in to see batman begins they were coming off of George Clooney as there last horrific vision....nipples and all. So they had pretty low expectations and then they were very plesently surprised. However when I went and saw superman, the last image in my head was christopher reeve A man who was superman, the man who made us believe a man can fly. I loved it, so I think others were left unsatisfied by comparison. However I don't think I have ever been more into a movie than when lex stabbed him in the back, and we watch superman just get beat down by his powerless enemy. And yes I know lex was back AGAIN. but guess what I have also seen multiple X-Men movies with Magneto, (all of them infact). So with the development of the new superman still underway, and filming to hopefully start happening in Jan of 09, I am letting you know from what I have read in interviews with Brandon Routhe, that they have heard your cries for action, and it sounds like the next one will be much more action packed. So I say hold hope for the Man of Steel, cause it could get really good.

I do have to say however that I am insanley biased towards the character, every inch of my tiny studio is covered in superman stuff, and even my fiance encouraged me to get my latest tattoo, which is a giant superman standing on top of the shield. So yeah...I kind of like the guy.

I agree that the casting and effects were fine, that it was a good LOOKING movie, but it was just such an amazing bore. The scene with the plane was excellent and sort of built up my expectations for what might follow, but then pretty much nothing really happens for the remaining hour and a half or so. It's like the climax of the movie was at the end of the first act. Even though it was supposed to be a sequel, it seemed like more of a rehash of events from the first couple of movies. Lex is back for the 4th or 5th time (OK, he is THE Superman villain) and he has a crazy real estate scheme? I also started to think that maybe the kid got the superpowers from Lois's side, as Supes seems to be the real damsel in distress in this thing. Meanwhile, Lois was getting flung around a crashing airplane and getting bashed in the head by giant metal doors on a sinking boat, only to emerge seemingly unscathed moments later.

I think I'm most disappointed in the fact that this is the best that they could come up with after over a decade of trying to figure out how to re-launch the franchise. From what I've seen, there were some pretty off-the-wall ideas of what the movie should have been, depending on who was attached at the time, and while many of them were just plain wrong, they were at least different and/or interesting. Superman Returns just wasn't the movie that it needed to be, especially after the successful re-launch of the Batman franchise (which DID manage to be more original, despite the fact that it was somewhat covering some old ground), and Warner Brothers and the filmmakers shouldn't have assumed that a sequel was a given, because it may never come, not that the ending of Superman Returns really left me wanting to see what would happen next.

I loved the casting, loved the effects, but damn, did this movie suck! I love Supes to death but when the most exciting part of the movie is when he catches a plane, then there is NO WAY this movie gets any more than one star out of me!
How can you not put any real action in a movie that's over 2 hours long that revolves around a super-hero!!!
It was a beautiful movie, it really was, but it just wasn't a good movie.

(not trying to piss anyone off, just giving my opinion)
