Welcome true believers to the Book Report. This is where you can go to find out useful info about the world of comics on a weekly basis. We’ll have industry news and the like as well as reports on most things comics related. You’ve been warned, now let’s get to it.
Spider-Man 4 get’s a writer?
That’s the word from the Hollywood Reporter anyway. It looks like playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is in final negotiations to write the script for Spider-Man 4. While it’s true the guy won a Pulitzer for his drama Rabbit Hole I think it’s fair to say that Spider-Man is an entirely different animal. Here’s hoping that this guy is a fan of the comic at the very least. You might already know but it looks like Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are returning to the project along with possibly Kirsten Dunst. No word yet on how often she’ll be soaking wet this time around.
Cool… if you actually liked Smallville.
The guys who brought you the dreadfully painful Smallville are back to threaten your lives yet again wth even greater feats of sacrilege. The dynamic duo of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have been brought on to write the big screen adaptation of Robotech the massive 80’s space opera. In all fairness these jerks did write Spider-Man 2 so this couldn’t be all bad. This task might be too daunting for anyone to write.
Hot off the web, and onto shelves.
Ultra Popular Web Comic The Dreamer will be published by IDW comics. The book is renowned for its great visuals and historic accuracy and has fans that go beyond the typical comic book readers. Here’s hoping that the transition from web to print continues this books success for old and new fans alike. The series will feature the original covers by Lora Innes, as well as new covers painted by Jenny Frison.
2009, the year of the Astro Boy?
Astro Boy will be coming to theaters as a CGI movie on October 23, 2009. Imagi Studios had to close deals with several companies in order to get the rights to release the film and others. IDW Publishing is involved because they will be publishing Astro Boy comics and graphic novels to coincide with the films release. The idea of a CGI movie sounds perfect, hopefully it will be good so other companies will follow suit.
Thor gets animated.
In line with their 2010 theatrical release Marvel Animation will be putting out a cartoon series based on Thor. Given Marvels track record with animation this is nothing to be pleased about. For the life of me I can’t ever figure out what Marvel is doing, it’s as if they’re trying to tank their animation projects on purpose. You would think that animation would be a no brainer, but not when it comes to Marvel where they make things seemingly as difficult as possible. You’ve been warned.
Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard get the shaft.
Talk about unfair, the two guys responsible for the Batman: The Dark Knight score have been disqualified because of a simple technicality. They apparently had too many names on the music cue sheet therefore creating speculation that Zimmer and Howard didn’t do enough of the work to warrant receiving the award. First off, how come they couldn’t consider all five people named on the cue sheet for the award? Secondly the judges were given documentation that stated that Zimmer and Howard did the lion’s share of the work, and still they DQ’d them. Where is the justice dammit!
Don’t piss off the Ratner!
So the news of Brett Ratners involvement I a new Conan project was a bit premature. According to the LA Times Ratner is focused primarily on making Beverly Hills Cop 4 (really) and is only in preproduction as far as Conan goes. He was very irritated when he told the Times that Millennium Films’ Avi Lerner shouldn’t have been talking to the media about plans that weren’t finalized. Ouch!
