What would prom season be without a nice little movie about a deranged killer murdering well-dressed teenagers? It's been 28 years since the original Prom Night terrorized Jamie Lee Curtis. Now it's Brittany Snow's turn. On the set of a lavish Hollywood style dance hall, Snow sat in her sparkly gown and chatted.
Crave Online: Are you feeling very nostalgic filming this movie? Any prom flashbacks?
Brittany Snow: I never went to my prom, actually. I never went to my real prom. I was filming American Dreams at the time. So I actually went to my prom on American Dreams in the '60s, which was really fun, in like a '60s prom dress and everything. I never got to go back to my real prom, but I had like a graduation party with my ten best girlfriends back home in Florida. We had sort of like an end of high school, like your little group of friends has kind of like an end of the year party, a grad party. So that was kind of my prom. It was really cool.
Crave Online: It can't be easy working on a movie set in those heels.
Brittany Snow: Oh, you have no idea! These have been the craziest things, because they were established on the first day, and then after, on the second day, I found that they don't fit me at all. So there's straps connected to my feet because they don't stay on.
Crave Online: That's not part of the shoe?
Brittany Snow: No. It's the only way I can move without them coming off of me and falling.
Crave Online: Isn't the point of wearing a long dres that you don't have to show your feet?
Brittany Snow: Yeah, I guess, but I'm running around so much, just because I'm getting chased and stuff, that I have to lift up my dress, or else. But I have fallen three times. All of which were times where I was being chased by Fenton the killer. We were just doing the scene, me and Johnathon [Schaech], and it was just us. I had to do kind of my own stunts of like throwing this lamp in front of him and running around. I was running so fast and I'm crying and I'm freaking out that he's coming after me, my dress went down on the floor and I actually stepped on my dress. So it slipped out from under me, and I slid like baseball like home run slide right into the door, the closed door, and like hit my like shin, and I was bleeding, and then I had to do this... Then I did it two takes later, and I did the exact same thing again! They had it on playback, doing it in slow motion, of me being like, "Nooooo..." Sliding in or whatever. Everyone's laughing. I was like, "Yeah, real funny!" I'm bleeding.
Crave Online: Maybe that'll be on the DVD blooper reel.
Brittany Snow: I hope so. We have had so much like crazy funny times on this movie. I heard that making a horror movie or a thriller is always the most fun because it's just such a tough storyline that when it's not rolling, you have so much fun. It has definitely been the case, because I have never laughed so hard doing anything. The cast that I'm working with and the people, the actors who are playing my best friends, we've become so close. We just are hysterical, like laughing every single second. So it's been a really, really fun time for sure.
Crave Online: What do you think of doing a PG-13 Prom Night?
Brittany Snow: I'm a huge thriller/horror fan and I'm 21, so I grew up with like the Screams and the I Know What You Did Last Summers and all those kind of movies. Always those were my favorites but I definitely like and have always liked storylines where there's an intelligence to it. There's kind of a subplot going on where it's not just teenagers running around and it's just there's like the classic shower scene. Why does she take a shower? Who knows, but she does! And then the two couples, they have sex and then they die. There are definite things that come in a horror film. I thought with this, it was kind of out of the box in that way. Yeah, it's PG-13, so it's not as bloody or gory or in-your-face like guts spurting out and things like that, which kind of can be really fun and really cool to watch, especially if it's something that de-sensitizes you almost. But I think that with something like this, it's definitely a movie that a lot of people can relate to, and younger teenagers can see, and it kind of makes it more of a thriller and not so much of a gory horror film, because it's PG-13. So we've been really careful about that.
Crave Online: Is this also your first big starring role instead of being part of an ensemble?
Brittany Snow: Yeah, definitely. This was a really great opportunity because this was the first thing that I was the lead girl in, and I could give my opinions about the script. The producers and the director were very open and very willing to take my ideas, whether they liked them or not. [Laughs] But it was cool to be a part of something that I felt like I could really create something and really feel like I was leading this big thing that I think will be really, really cool. I've been really lucky in the past of doing ensemble things where I've always had the chance to do great parts and character pieces in an ensemble, and learn from that. But this is something that I thought would be very challenging to work every day, and really dive into this character and create this movie as well, with the director and producers. So it was definitely a very cool opportunity.
Crave Online: Did you audition, and did they make you scream?
Brittany Snow: I read with [director] Nelson [McCormick] and they did not make me scream. And my character doesn't really scream ever in the movie. It's really weird. Everybody else does but the thing with my character is that Fenton just really wants to love me and be with me and kiss me and hug me, because he just wants to be with Donna. So our relationship is very twisted in the way of he was my teacher, and yes, he did kill my whole family, but I know that he doesn't want to really "hurt me." So it's this very cat and mouse game of deciding what I'm going to do and how I can use his obsession with me to my advantage, and not trying to freak out and blow the whole thing because then he can turn on me. So the audition scene that I did was just a little scene that, actually, I think we're filming today with me and Lisa. It was just kind of a bonding girlfriend moment. It really had nothing to do with the killer. That was pretty much it. I think I had screamed, I just don't remember. I do scream like, "Leave me alone!" and I'm freaking out. I think this whole entire movie I'm crying. I remember shooting a whole bunch of stuff and being like, "Wow, my character is always crying." I hate to be that girl in movies where you're just like, "All right, waterworks, cool it."
Crave Online: Do you have a go-to thought that makes you cry on cue?
Brittany Snow: Well, I'm not going to tell you my secrets, if that's what you're asking. I think every great crier, and I'm not saying this about me because that would make me very conceited, but I think that actresses that are able to kind of draw up emotions and be very emotional have either had something happen, or they just have that ability to kind of connect with certain things that are going on, or they can feed off of other people. There's just certain things that I think that you can do. So I do various things.
Crave Online: What kind of relationship have you had with Johnathon off set if it's that twisted in the film?
Brittany Snow: I love John and he's such a cool guy. I feel like he's 20. He's very, very, just easy going and very, very generous and professional, and we have a great relationship. He has shared with me so many stories about his career and working with so many great people, and he's just been so complimentary and very, very sweet to me, because he is such an actor that I really admire. He's so talented and he's done so many great things. So getting to work with him was really cool, especially because he has a definite ability to be so nice and chipper and loving, and then they call action, [snaps fingers] he's creepy, freaking me out, those eyes, like he can pierce through anything, I swear. It's very strange. I remember the first time I ever saw him do a scene, it was like out in the hallway, and he was asking the maid for some towels, and that was the first scene that we ever shot together. He was like laughing with the crew and having a fun time, and they yelled action, and the way he said, "I'd like some more towels, please…" Like so serene and very put together, but there was that little creepy edge to him. I was like, "Oh my gosh, this guy is really good. It's going to be good."
Crave Online: They might want to do a sequel if this is successful. Will you be around to do the sequel, and would that be something you'd be interested in?
Brittany Snow: "Will I be around?" I hope I don't die! No, I know. I think Prom Night 2 would be, if it was the same people doing it, it would be so much fun. I mean, I've had such a really great experience working with Nelson and the cast and Johnathon and getting to do a part like this that I think it would be really fun. The only problem is who is going to be in Prom Night 2? I'm not going to let you know who survives and who doesn't, but it's not going to be the same people, all of them. That would be terrible. I know that Scream 2, Scream 3, and
I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer 10, they're always really fun to me, and so I would be very lucky to be a part of something, if it was that successful. I think it's very important in a teenager's life to have a cool horror movie to relate to and kind of grow up with. I did, so it would be very cool to be a part of.
