You may not recognize his name, but we've all known his trademark cinematic voice for decades. Don LaFontaine, the voiceover artist credited with the timeless movie trailer-opening phrase "In a world where..." has died at the age of 68.
LaFontaine's voice has graced more than 5,000 movie trailers, including, well... name a movie. He recently stepped in front of the camera to appear in a funny Geico commercial:
As for his catch phrase, In a 2007 interview, LaFontaine explained the strategy behind it. "We have to very rapidly establish the world we are transporting them (the viewers) to," he said. "That's very easily done by saying, 'In a world where... violence rules', 'In a world where... men are slaves and women are the conquerors'. You very rapidly set the scene."
The epically-voiced man got his start in 1965 when an announcer failed to show fort he recording of a promo for the film Gunfighters of Casa Grande. The studio loved what they heard, and the rest is history.
