New downloadable content for Halo 3

The Heroic Map Pack is here!

Available as you read this on X-box Live is the first ever Halo 3 map pack containing brand new multiplayer levels for everyone’s favorite first person shooter. For 800 X-Box points gamers will get The Heroic Map Pack that contains three new multiplayer levels.

Standoff

Rat's Nest

Standoff offers gamers a symmetrical valley, two entrenched bases, and multiple fields of boulders that make the map ideal for games like V.I.P., capture the flag, and of course slayer. The second level now available is designated Rat’s Nest and offers an extra large playing field complete with enough room indoor for all the vehicle mayhem you can stand, the stage is influenced heavily by the games campaign mode so be prepared for a lot of big team battles. All the maps can be edited using the forge program, but the final map was created with the forge in mind specifically.

The Foundry

The Foundry is a massive map that is simply littered with objects that can be manipulated with the forge to create numerous combinations. This is really where Halo 3 shines amongst its peers, players could spend hours designing their own maps just for their buddies to run amok on. How long before gamers will start getting recognized for superior map building?

This expansion is the first in a series, with the Heroic Pack becoming free for X-Box Live subscribers in Spring 2008, just before the next set of maps becomes available.

I just played CTF on standoff. It was awesome! Great map for team play. I think the Red team had their heads up their collective asses though. I got their flag and ran all the back to my base without even seeing one red team member.

A: You can choose the new maps from the Custom Games map selection menu – they should simply appear in the stack. NOTE: If the maps are not appearing the first time you look, try backing out and then choosing the Map selection screen again. The system may need to be “prompted” to look for new content. In Matchmaking, a new playlist “Heroic DLC” should be visible that contains ONLY the new maps. The new maps will also be sprinkled throughout the other playlists and may be selected when the system sees that everyone in a lobby has installed the new content.

Q: What if I don’t buy the maps, can I still matchmake properly?

A: Yes. If you don’t have the maps, you will matchmake normally, but you cannot play in the “New Maps Only” playlist. Other than that, you shouldn’t see any difference. Naturally you won’t matchmake into games that are using the new maps. Nor will you be able to join custom games featuring the new maps.

So, you can play the same way as always and just wait for everyone to have the maps and the new map to be automatically selected. OR, you can just go to the "new map only' section and play the new maps.
