What if I told you that you could play an online FPS (first person shooter) that was a lot like Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare? What if I told you that the game ran on just about any PC with a decent connection speed? Now what if I told you that it was free to play? All those things are just part of the appeal that is Combat Arms, the latest online game from Nexon.
Combat Arms boasts some serious graphics and frame rate in a game that will immediately remind you of some of the best FPS’s on the console market complete with online play for free. The game offers tons of options and play types and runs pretty smoothly.
First off this game isn’t for the faint of heart and casual gamers will need to get some serious practice in before they can excel and earn experience in the game. The controls are a bit tricky for the new comer at first, but within five or ten minutes you should feel pretty comfortable moving around with the keyboard and mouse.
The game has several maps to choose from that vary in size and structure. On most of the maps there are plenty of places for your players to go and explore why bullets go whizzing by. In addition there are the standard modes of play from team deathmatch to capture the flag, it’s all here. Before the match gets started there is a pretty robust character customization screen where you can decide how your 3-D avatar looks, and what he’s carrying. Don’t weigh him down too much or he’ll be a slow moving target!
As is standard the game rewards you for double kills and head shots and has an assortment of weapons that add variety to the game. With all the customization that the game offers players will get the chance to tailor their games to exactly what they want to see and how they want to play. The game allows you to turn friendly fire on and off which can be a godsend early on in the experience.
When I got the chance to play through the game with Nexon my biggest question was how they planned on making money with a free game. They assured me that there will be accessories that you can pay for. However, none of the accessories that can be bought give players an unfair advantage in the game, which I greatly appreciated.
Instead of buying items outright, they are earned through experience, there is also a time limit on how long things last so no one is dominant for long unless they keep playing. This is a dramatic improvement over traditional ranking systems and allows for fresh faces to always populate the top spots. It also allows someone who doesn’t have the extra cash to still enjoy a great game, better than a lot of FPS’s on the market right now.
The only things that are missing from the game are voice chat and a solo player campaign of some sort, but those are truly minor complaints. It’s almost not fair to the consoles for them to make a game like Combat Arms, a game that lets players jump right in and play within a few minutes of logging on. Combat Arms has to be experienced in order to be truly appreciated, plus there is no risk considering the lack of a cost. Log onto Nexon.Net and get started its really as simple as it sounds.
