Samsung 94 Series First Look

The Samsung 94 is a wireless HDTV, very cool.

One of the most annoying things about a home theatre room is having the cable outlet on the wall you don’t want to setup your new plasma HDTV at. It always look better on the long wall, you say to yourself, not along the short wall one could barely fit a 12-inch black and white television on. Samsung hears your cries of technology pain and by the end of the year is planning to unleash on the American market a wireless plasma HDTV.

The new Samsung 94 Series will consist of two models, the 50-inch FP-T5094 and the 58-inch FP-T5894. These will be priced at $3,599 and $5,299 respectively. For these prices you get what Samsung describes is a first of its kind in the United States – wireless 802.11n connectivity in a plasma. This system works by plugging in various home theatre components like HD DVD players, A/V receivers and cable boxes into a broadcast receiver. This receiver transfers the audio-video signals from these devices up to 200 feet to a 94 Series plasma. Since it is using 802.11 technology line of sight need not occur, so you can have your gear in a closet for a cleaner look in your viewing area.

The new plasmas can display in full HD 1080p resolution and are capable of receiving wireless video in up to 1080i resolution. As an added bonus for the wireless support, reported consumer electronics trade publication TWICE, consumers will be able to connect a PC to the wireless base station. This connection will allow for one to play stored music and image files on the television. You should also be able to connect to the Internet to watch online video.

The Samsung 94 Series of course can also function as a regular plasma for those who don’t want the wireless. Either way you end up with a television which is loaded with some sweet features. These include anti-reflection technology for better viewing under different lighting conditions, an auto wall mount system to assist in putting your plasma above the fireplace and “invisible side speakers” which pump out sound from the sides of the television without showing a visible speaker footprint.

Other features Samsung is planning for the 94 series include 18-bit color processing for deeper colors, 15,000:1 contrast ratio for sharper images, a built-in NTSC/ATSC/QAM digital tuner for receiving over the air HDTV channels, Energy Star compliance, simulated surround sound, three HDMI 3.1 ports with CEC technology, a USB 2.0 port for viewing digital images from connected devices and component video support.
