SteelSeries 7G Gaming Keyboard
SteelSeries is a high-end line of gaming peripherals for gamers which packs a whopping $US150 price tag and promises to be the be-all, end-all of professional-grade keyboards.
The manufacturer is also behind the famed Ikari laser mouse, which also sports a ridiculous price tag but features a built-in processor which allows you to have plug-and-play capability while allowing you to adjust the sensitivity settings on-the-fly. The feature was very useful for gamers who needed the extra accuracy during gaming but don’t want to live with it while doing other more mundane tasks.
What does the 7G has to offer to justify the price? For starters, it is one of the few fully-mechanical keyboards on the market, which means you get a stronger, more instant tactile feel reminiscent of those old, huge, clunky Model M keyboards from IBM for years gone by. You also get the heavy weight of older laptops thanks to the use of iron-infused plastic, which means this keyboard is going to sit on your keyboard table like a heavy sumo wrestler and won’t be moved by anything short of an earthquake. It is also adept enough to recognize half-pressed buttons and register them properly, which is apt to happen for people who type faster or have more urgent matters on their minds than their hands allow them to type.
Unfortunately, since it’s targeted at gamers, some people are going to complain about the lack of bling on this keyboard, mainly with the lack of a decent backlight. With most consumer keyboards now offering this feature, it seems unreasonable that the 7G doesn’t have one.
