Queens of the Stone Age make film based on cover art

The broken light bulb will hit the silver screen.

Rock royalty Queens of the Stone Age are in the process of creating an animated film based on Bulby, the smoking broken lightbulb that graces the cover of their latest album, Era Vulgaris. After meeting with studio execs, they’ve reportedly brought in a designer and a shortlist of directors to work on the project, according to Gigwise.

A series of shorts featuring Bulby have already been produced for the promotion of Era Vulgaris, and he appears in music videos for the album as well. With a personality mix of Frank Sinatra and Andrew Dice Clay, Bulby’s the perfect role model for children. View a clip here: Queens of the Stone Age video.

Explaining the logic behind putting Bulby and another, pirate and peg-legged, lightbulb on the cover of their album, head Queen Josh Homme had this to say: "The title has an accidental air of seriousness, and I think that just helps to kind of illustrate that, 'No, no, no, not that serious actually,' you know. I also think that it kind of strikes a little bit of a balance between that '50s generation of advertising, that sort of naive generation where Drippy the Oil Drop sold Exxon Oil or Fred Flintstone sold smokes, you know, which seems really Satanic."

Queens of the Stone age kick off a UK tour on Friday, but will be home soon to play a hometown show at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, Californiyay. All proceeds from the show will benefit founding member Homme’s hometown charities, including his former high school.
