If you think you have the skill to be a rapper it’s time to put up or shut up because The World Series of Hip Hop is heading your way in August from the 5th through the 9th at the AmericasMart in Atlanta, GA.
"This is an opportunity of a life time,” says official spokeswoman Roxanne Shante, who is considered one of the greatest battle rappers ever. “This is like a hip-hop lottery; you have to be in it to win it. I can't wait to see some unknown rapper, really shame some industry rapper. Most people get in the industry to make a million dollars. But very few make one dollar. Here's a chance for them to make $1,000,000.00 in one night!”
There are three divisions of competition based strictly on age. The Heavyweight division is for rappers over 25 years old, with the Middleweight Division open to ages 21-24, and finally the Lightweight division for those between the ages of 18-20. The Middleweights are competing for a $500,000 prize with the Lightweight winner going home with $250,000. The contest will be hosted by Cipha Sounds and Monie Love.
The event will be held tournament style like the NCAA Final Four with a series of smaller matches happening over the course of 8 to 10 hours, that a lot of rapping, so you’d better get some practice in. The fields will be stacked with talent from all over with the spotlight centered on the Heavyweight grand prize.
“An unknown rapper can become an overnight millionaire in the Heavyweight category,” says Furqaan Clover, the event’s organizer. Even known rappers can use that kind of money. “I’ve spoken to established artists who are signed. They have told me that $1 million is enough to go into battle. They feel it's like taking candy from a baby, but the competition is going to be stiff.” Plus, he adds, “established artists can enter but they have so much to lose.”
