Pound for Pound: Nick Diaz

The Difference Between Potheads and Cheaters.

Former UFC and Pride fighter Nick Diaz is a lot of things.  He’s impulsive, arrogant, narcissistic, and probably at least a little bit insane.  He once started a fight with Joe Riggs in the hospital after their bout at UFC 57.  He reportedly threw a shoe at Diego Sanchez while taunting him in the locker room before their fight.  In short, Nick Diaz is a sociopath with a black belt in jiu-jitsu, and that’s the worst kind of sociopath.

What Nick Diaz is not, however, is a cheater.  So why is he being treated like one?

As many mixed martial arts fans know, after his submission victory over Takanori Gomi in February Diaz tested positive for marijuana.  Really positive.  According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the amount of THC in Diaz’s system was more than seventeen times the normal level.  That’s like Willie Nelson and Method Man put together (come to think of it, why haven’t those two starred in an irreverent comedy about unlikely friends by now?)

As a result of his positive test, Diaz’s win was changed to a no-contest and he was given a six-month suspension by the Commission, as well as a fine.  The fine is understandable, and even the suspension.  Diaz broke a rule.  He tested positive for an illegal substance.  But what about the no-contest, which erases his grueling and impressive victory over one of the world’s top lightweights?

Judging by the way the same Commission – as well as the much more stringent California Commission – has responded to recent events, it seems Diaz would have been better off if he had tested positive for steroids.  He’d have received a fine and a longer suspension, but his win would have stayed on the books.

Whoa. Is that really Nick Diaz who commented? If so, sweet.

This article is right on the money. Why do they even bother testing for weed? I know tons of jiu-jitsu practitioners who smoke it. The athletic commissions should get their priorities straight.

And let's see Nick Diaz back in action again. That guy is awesome, not to mention he gogo'd Gomi while high.

I would just like to say thank you and that I appreciate this article, however I don't believe myself to be crazy, arrogant, or a sociopath. Define crazy. What if I said crazy is going to work day in and day out for a boss you hate just so that you can live what you think is the American dream. It just so happens that I'm very sane and content with what life has to offer, win or lose, rich or poor. I don't think that anti-social or sociopath is a good word to describe me considering, all the people that I'm associated with training, gyms, students, friends of mine and friends of students. Smoking weed is very social. Second thing I would like to say, is if you are like me and you are not rollin' on 20s and going to clubs every weekend, chewing vicodens, drinking alcohol, chewing vicodens because you drank alcohol last weekend because you hurt yourself because were unmotivated to warm up from your last excersion. Truth is, if you didn't graduate with honors and a scholarship from wrestling or football or are some type of super athlete like that, then you probably never got high with the homies in high school and would be way too paranoid as a result of smoking weed now days and are probably a bitch and I would probably slap and you'd cry. Hate to stereotype but this is why I don't think jocks make good fighters. They were spoon fed and had someone pushing for them and coaching them...highly likely to have been daddy. Problem is, anyone crazy enough for slapping one of these metero jock pussies are usually too out of sorts to get a license to fight these days or have someone help cuorse them through and MRI, medicals and boxing license under the Athletic Commission. Even though you might have the balls and are crazy enough to fight, you would probably get held down by one of these jocks and they walk away with the win laughing due to your low level of athleticism. Bottom line is smoking weed is good for MMA and jiu-jitsu. Exploring jiu-jitsu and your game plan is to explore consciousness. You have to be able to slow your day down enough so that you don't go crazy and you can think about training with a fresh start. It feels great and is a good approach instead of getting bored trying to give your mind a rest, taking time off or taking a break; going out, chewing vicadins and drinking all night, insistent that its okay because no one is telling you its not because they do it more than you and they want you to go too. Can't blame them when their job and American dream drug test them and controls them and their decision to smoke weed or drink. How ignorant when people die from drinking and prescription drugs but the commission won't test for them. Everyone thinks that their government is protecting them by saying its bad, but in reality its good for some people. Especially if its going to keep you in the gym, away from the prescription drugs and alcohol providing tranquility to space out your day and keeping you in the gym non stop. Not everybody can do this but, plenty of people could and be way more content with their life if so. Mixed martial arts, as in arts. We don't tell our musical artists how to write their music so why do we tell our martial artists how to put their MMA together? I don't know about you, but I like my rockstars choking to death on their own vomit. This is a new sport. Take it from me life's short, its a small world and there is only a handful of us in this sport that train right, work hard and can see what I see. Eat right, support organic industries. Smoke weed. Yay for veggie ballparks! Course I hate baseball. FIGHT the power.

i think he's right on both counts: MMA organizations need to be tougher about steroids and less tough about pot. i mean, maybe if pot made you better at the sport it would make sense... but as i see it, if anything, it will make you worse.

and the UFC doesn't really care about steroid use, even if Dana White is trying to say so... you can tell by their actions. they just want to look like they care.
