Stewart O'Nan is known in niche literary circles as the author of intimate character dramas like Snow Angels, which was his first movie adaptation. However, he had one especially popular book. With Stephen King, he cowrote Faithful: Two Die Hard Boston Red Sox Fans Chronicle the Historic 2004 Season. Now, HBO is looking to make a miniseries out of it and he has plenty of thoughts about this season. Though we spoke just before March, his comments still hold up.
Crave Online: Let's talk about the Red Sox.
Stewart O'Nan: No, the World Champion Red Sox.
Crave Online: Is HBO working on a miniseries of Faithful: Two Die Hard Boston Red Sox Fans Chronicle the Historic 2004 Season?
Stewart O'Nan: Yeah, HBO has optioned it and wants to develop some sort of miniseries. I think they did very well with Curse of the Bambino and The End of the Curse of the Bambino, so they're going to try to do something like that with the 2004 season. Of course, they signed that up before they won again in 2007 so now I think they're going to have to maybe add some sort of appendix.
Crave Online: Would you and Stephen be in the miniseries since it's your conversation?
Stewart O'Nan: I wouldn't think so. I don't know how they're going to put together. I have no clue.
Crave Online: Who would you like to play you?
Stewart O'Nan: No idea. No idea. I think the most accessible way of doing it would be to put together the film clips from MLB and maybe bring in, like they did with End of the Curse of the Bambino, bring in people to comment on it. I don't know.
Crave Online: Do you have any words of encouragement for Cubs fans?
Stewart O'Nan: It can happen very quickly. It can turn around. All the history can turn around like that. I said that to Stephen King in Faithful there. Once you win it, everyone forgets. All those years, they just evaporate. No one remembers the Angels as a hard luck team. They won it in 2002, but all that Donnie Moore history, all that Gene Autry, all that stuff, Gene Mauch, it goes away. The White Sox, all of a sudden it goes away. So to the Cubs fans, it'll happen and when it happens, it feels great. And it will never feel like that way again. Never.
Crave Online: Maybe you and Stephen should do a book about the Cubs, because you cracked the first curse.
Stewart O'Nan: We just watched. They did it.
