Dan Brooks is no gentleman, but his fear of conflict allows him to safely transcribe the remarks of Colonel Rawlins Birch, one of our nation’s oldest and most frightening gentlemen. This week, the Colonel considers the dangerously foppish pursuit of literature.

Members of the common orders often assume that a Gentleman’s life is devoted entirely to masculine pursuits: hunting, roulette, impregnating Chinese masseuses, rocketry and what have you. In fact, books—so often the accompaniment of dandies and ladies at their sewing circles—can be a friend to the Gentleman as invaluable as any Cantonese-fluent abortioner.

The well-rounded Gentleman must invest considerable effort in the life of the mind, if only to fend off the legal assaults of his acquisitive progeny (many of whom have pierced their faces with metal objects. Are you reading this, Rupert? Of course not—you can only be reached through your abominable Paste Station.) To that end, he would do well to familiarize himself with various types of books, including:
