Apparently Mel Gibson retired this week. At least that’s what my mom told me when I asked her about the news story. Then I asked her why he would retire if he was in the middle of a busy production slate and she just got angry and told me to go play outside. She was a big Mel Gibson fan in the ’80s. You have to understand she’s taking it hard.

I always thought Mel was a nice guy. I lived next door to him for a few months last year, and he would give me a ride to my Little League games. It was nice of him to offer, except when he would stay for the games. And he would always insist we stop for Slurpees on the way to the park, and then just suck his down as fast as he could and complain about brain freeze the rest of the afternoon. Every time I stepped up to the plate, I’d hear someone in the stands screaming, “THERE’S A BLIZZARD IN MY SKULL!” Ballpark etiquette, Mel. Then one time on the ride home, he said that Sela Ward was the most beautiful woman on the planet. Geez, Mel says some pretty weird things sometimes.
