Did M.I.A.'s video for "Born Free" seem familiar? It did to Nathan Jordan!

Have you ever come up with a totally awesome idea, only to find out that someone else has already thought of it? This has happened to me numerous times in the past. For example, a few years ago I had this incredible script about talking babies with genius IQs. Before I even had a chance to let anyone read the script, Baby Geniuses comes out.

I was disappointed to be sure, but about a year later it occurred to me, “Well, what if the genius babies have superpowers?” I was psyched, certain I was going to sell my idea for millions of dollars. Lo and behold, a few weeks later I see a poster for SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2. Let’s just hope nobody is planning to release a movie about superbaby geniuses in 3-D, because that’s the only screenplay idea I have left.

I even had a dream that was just like this!

Lately, I’ve been hard at work on my first children’s book, Goody Goody Gumdrop and the Kingdom of the Unicorns. It was nearly finished, but this week I received a punch to the gut because M.I.A.’s “Born Free” video totally rips off my idea.

Just to be sure I wasn’t being paranoid, I contacted the 12 or so close friends and family members to whom I sent the latest draft of Goody Goody Gumdrop and the Kingdom of the Unicorns to see if any of them saw the similarities. Unfortunately, none of these people had read my book despite the fact that I had sent it to them 3 weeks ago.
