Back in May, we reported that Zuda Comics was making huge changes, eliminating the competition aspect of DC Comics' webcomics imprint that had put it on the map and brought digital comics to the mainstream in a big way. Well today, even more dire news hit concerning the future of Zuda, as DC announced that zudacomics.com would cease to exist as of today. However, coinciding with the launch of DC's ComiXology/PlayStation Network app, it was also announced that certain Zuda series would be continuing, though not in the free format we've become accustomed to.
Black Cherry Bombshells, Azure, Bottle of Awesome, Supertron, and Lily of the Valley were the only current series mentioned to be continuing via ComiXology/PSN, in addition to the already available High Moon and Bayou. No mention was made of the contracts that the dozens of other winners received, if they have been terminated, or will be honored in the future. Zuda will now release their stories in "issues" - one issue consisting of 20 pages - the first of which will be available for download free of charge. Every subsequent issue will be available for a fee of .99 cents.
For many, this defeats the entire purpose of why Zuda was created, and is certainly a huge disappointment to those competition winners (and some series that were still running) that haven't gotten their chance to finish their stories.
Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available!
