Marvel Comics Reveals Black Panther Animated Series

A while back, some may recall, that Marvel Comics and the BET network announced an animated Black Panther project that ultimately never saw the light of day. Well for the many Black Panther fans out there, your dream is about to come true. Marvel Knights Animation announced today that Black Panther: Who is the Black Panther?, the 12-episode series based on the graphic novel from writer Reginald Hudland and artist John Romita Jr, will be released on iTunes, Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Network and Microsoft Zune weekly beginning June 23.

Black Panther: Who is the Black Panther?

Even more exciting is the fact that the man who should play a live-action Black Panther should there ever be one, Djimon Hounsou, is providing the voice for the warrior king of Wakanda. The cast also includes Keri Washington as Princess Shuri and Kill Scott as Storm. Marvel made no mention of the previous deal with BET in the press release, but the creators themselves are clearly pumped for this series to finally see the light of day.

"The positive responses to news of the show have been so overwhelming, it’s great to finally make the Black Panther series available to everyone. Audiences get caught up on many levels – seeing John Romita Jr’s art come to life; the quality of the voice work by an award winning cast; the boldness of the politics, the music and humor. But see it for yourself!” said Hudlin.

Black Panther: Who is the Black Panther?

"The reaction by any person, upon viewing footage of a black panther, is universal: Awe. There is no more elegant a creature on the face of the planet. The creation of the character by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, in a turbulent political time, maintained that quality. Reggie Hudlin’s updated version follows that and adds an amazing, cinematic flair to it," Romita added.  "In my opinion, reading, and now viewing, the Black Panther series is much akin to witnessing a panther in person. Enjoy the elegance of the story, the elegance of the actors, their voices, their words, and…. the imagery.”

Black Panther: Who is the Black Panther?

Who is the Black Panther is the story of the titular character as he struggles to protect his nation while confronting the man who murdered his father. Very exciting news from the Marvel camp, so stay tuned for more!
