Not content to let a week pass with out a bombshell of a news headline, DC Comics announced today Brightest Day, a follow-up series to their current  critically acclaimed event Blackest Night.  Brightest Day will begin this April, just as Blackest Night is set to wrap  up, and will be 26 issues long shipping bi-weekly.

Just in case you were mildly concerned about the creative team behind this Blackest Night fallout series, fear not. DC's Executive Editor Dan Didio told DC's The Source blog "As you can imagine, we’re really excited by the great work the teams behind Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps have brought to our fans every month. And, we just don’t want to let go of that just yet. So Brightest Day will be written by Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi." It seems that CraveOnline's Best Writer of 2009 is about to strike again.

There is no mention of an art team yet, aside from Fernando Pasarin tackling Brightest Day #0, though Didio also mentions to stay tuned for more Brightest Day news later today. Being a 26 issue series that's shipping so rapidly, Didio also confirmed that DC has "a number of wonderful artists slated to contribute to the book."

Along with the announcement came the teaser below, which by all indications is telling me that I should wait to get those Lantern Corps tattoos I wanted, as it looks like I might be adding one more...

UPDATE: Mere moments after I posted this news, DC continued to announce that Brightest Day will indeed be an event comic that spans the DCU, and as such, there will be a number of new and current series with the Brightest Day banner at the top. Of course, following his construction of Blackest Night and The Flash: Rebirth, Geoff Johns' previously announced Flash ongoing series will be debuting with the Brightest Day banner and art by Adventure Comcs' Francis Manapul.

Of The Flash, Didio told The Source, "With this book, Geoff and Francis are really bringing Barry Allen back into the spotlight and cementing him as the premiere Flash in the DCU in his own monthly. It’s no secret that I’ve been waiting a long time to se this. I’ve always been a huge Barry fan, and I can say that Geoff and Francis are reinvigorating him as a character in much the same way Geoff did with Hal Jordan. Should be fun."

Oh, and of course, the cover to The Flash #1:

UPDATE 2: The Source blog has been updated once again with a bit more info about Brightest Day, this time pertaining to Titans. Didio says "Titans is another series that will fall directly under Brightest Day, with Eric Wallace and Fabrizio Fiorentino coming on board, starting with the Titans: Villans For Hire Special and then the regular series. We loved the work the two of them did on Ink, so we’re excited to see them build a new team of Titans, under the leadership of none other than Deathstroke, the Terminator."

In terms of the rest of the Titans roster, Didio only dropped a few names - Tattooed Man and Chesire - but surely more be revealed as time goes on. For now, a little tease of Fiorentino's spectacular Deathstroke pencils:

UPDATE 3: Once again, The Source has been updated with another new image, this time the cover of Justice League of America #44. Didio confirms that this issue will begin the series under the Brightest Day banner, but the members of the team are still being kept behind closed doors. More as it comes!

UPDATE 4: If you'll recall, we announced last week that superstar artist David Finch signed with DC Comics exclusively, and it appears that via all of this Brightest Day madness, his first project for the company has been revealed. Indeed, Finch will be providing covers to all issues of Brightest Day.

Didio says "I see this as a wonderful way to have David touch on all aspects of the DCU, and it gives fans the chance to see his interpretation of the entire DCU and its characters."

That seems to be it for today, folks, but DC is promising more big news throughout the week, so check back with us here at CraveOnline!
