David Finch Signs Exclusive DC Contract

The superstar artist is headed DC's way.

David Finch, an artist synonymous with badassery, has signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics in the first big news of the comics world for 2010. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it was announced via DC's The Source blog, where DC says Finch will call the publisher home "for the forseeable future". Finch is known for his detailed pencils, stellar cover work, intense interiors, and generally running rampant all over Marvel in books like Moon Knight, Avengers: Disassembled, and Ultimatum. Previously, his only work with DC characters aside from commissions came in the form of a Top Cow/DC crossover one-shot back in 1999.

In an interview with CBR, Finch said "It was just a matter of the timing being right. I've talked with [Executive Editor] Dan DiDio a few times in the past, and his enthusiasm is very infectious. He's got so much great stuff planned that I just really wanted to be a part of it."

There is no word of the artists' first official project as part of his new contract at this time, aside from cover work in early 2010 before diving into a full-time project. "I do have a pretty good idea what my first project will be, but I think it may surprise." Finch said. "I love the big three, obviously, along with every other comic book creator that aspires to work on superheroes. I'm a huge Lobo fan. Simon Bisley is the greatest, and his Lobo work still has a big impact for me. I love Legion a lot, and Doom Patrol. The Flash is great. Justice League may be the holy grail of the DCU, though. It's got so much in one place, and such a rich history of stories."

Finch goes on to talk about his favorite aspects of the DCU, from its iconic characters to its wide variety of story types that are ready for telling within the universe. "They can be futuristic and bright, or dark and dirty with wild pipes and gargoyles, and any kind of mixture in between. There's just so much more dramatic effect that I can get from such wild environments."

In terms of writers he'd like to work with, he gives a list like you might expect: "Geoff Johns would be a huge pleasure to work with. I've talked to him a few times, and he's a great guy. I love his work. Grant Morrison is like no other writer that I know of. He really knows how to make you think and surprise you. Paul Dini is one of my favorites, along with Keith Giffen, JMS, Peter Tomasi, Judd Winick, Gail Simone, Tony Daniel... there are so many!"

This is certainly a huge get for DC, and I for one am itching with anticipation for any announcement concerning Finch's future work. As always, stay tuned to Crave for updates!
