DC Comics to become DC Entertainment

Publisher Paul Levitz to step down.

With the recent acquisition of Marvel by Disney it was only a matter of time before Warner Bros. made a move with their property the cross town rival DC Comics. The company, which has been owned by Warner Bros. for some time has decided that now is the best time to restructure.

Now known as DC Entertainment Inc. the company will look to get back into the battle for movie property supremacy and take better advantage of their intellectual properties. This will include television, animation, and video games as well as films.

Comic fans should breathe a sigh of relief as it looks as though this won’t directly affect the distribution of regular DC Comics titles and graphic novels. Current Publisher Paul Levitz will step down from that position and go back to having more creative input into the comic book company, working again as a writer and contributing editor, as well as a consultant to DC Entertainment Inc.

The timing of this seems to mirror the Marvel acquisition but reports are out from several sources that say at least part of this development was almost two years in the making. Most, if not all of DC movie properties have been reigned in so that DCE can refocus their efforts. Does that mean that there will be no DC based movies for a while? The likely answer is no, because there are already projects in the works, what’s changing is the way in which the films are produced and in some cases who is doing the producing. In one example Joel Silver has reportedly been pulled from the Wonder Woman movie that has been in some sort of development for 10 years.

Silver, however is still listed as producer for the new Lobo movie coming down the pike with Guy Richie tapped to direct. In fact DC has several television projects coming out in the fall like Human Target and Midnight Mass. In film Jonah Hex is still coming to theaters as well as The Losers.
