This Month in Covers: August 2009

DC Comics pwns the covers of August. Also, Blair Butler.

One of the beautiful things about the comic book medium is that it is one of the few art forms that allows readers to both literally and figuratively judge books by their covers. The work of a cover artist is not always to encapsulate the plot of the issue; in fact, most times the cover is completely unrelated to the content inside. The primary job of the artist is to make the book stand out - to grab readers by the throat and force them to take a look at the issue, even as it's speckled in with dozens of other books on the shelf, Wednesday after Wednesday.

It is entirely possible to purchase a book based on its cover and find the content inside to be complete drivel, or worse yet, with art that pales in comparison to the work of the cover artist. Alternatively, a poor cover could potentially lead readers away from books that are otherwise goldmines. There's a lot riding on that cover, so CraveOnline is taking it upon ourselves to take a look at the covers and artists that made us stop dead in our tracks for the month of August 2009.

Once you complete this article, I know what you will think: "Wow, this guy has quite the DC bias". I don't. In the cover department, August just happened to be owned by DC Comics, straight up. I even purposely tried to search other publishers for a cover that knocked me on my feet, and perhaps if this list incorporated 10 books, I would've found some. Unfortunately, this it's not.

5. Booster Gold #23 Cover by Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund

Booster Gold #23

What do boy comic book nerds love more than comic books themselves? Well, nothing really.

But a distant second would be girl comic book nerds. And on August's issue of Booster Gold, DC delivered us a photograph cover of G4's Fresh Ink host and comedian Blair Butler, sporting a Dan Jurgens "Booster Gold Fan Club" t-shirt. No, this has nothing to do with anything going on in the issue, but I can guarantee it BOOSTED (heh) sales a bit, which perhaps was the point. Regardless, geeks can now nerd out that a hot girl they think they have a shot with likes the same B-list superhero that they do. Rejoice!
