Top 10 Worst Costumes in Comics

We all know that reading comic books - at least the superhero genre, specifically - requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelief. That's where things like characterization come into play, helping us to relate to these fantastic characters that can fly, breathe underwater, read minds, and do otherwise otherworldly things. But what happens when there is something so incredibly distracting that the fourth wall is destroyed and all the reader can focus on his how absolutely ridiculous a character's costume is, taking any spectacle or emotional connection out of the equation? A lot of characters we know and love today started out wearing horribly designed outfits, and yet they bore the burden and their characters still shine, because the person wearing the costume is endlessly compelling. So just who are the worst dressed characters in comics? See for yourself:


10. Rocket Racer
First Appearance: The Amazing Spider-Man #172



The first lucky entrant on our list is one of the few black superhero/villains in comics, and unfortunately, like the others on this list, was stuck with an atrocious outfit to go with his ridiculous gimmick. Robert Farrell was a science prodigy left to care for his siblings in his parent's passing. Being that he was a black man in the 70's, Marvel obviously chose to make him turn to a life of crime using his scientific know-how in order to feed his family using a rocket powered skateboard and bad alliteration. You'd think with all of those brains, he'd make something a little less conspicuous - though I am quite certain it is aerodynamic. Rocket Racer also seems to be drawing his power from the Hulkamaniacs with that great red and yellow color scheme, obviously the perfect colors to avoid the police and Spidey when robbing a bank. Thankfully, as most black super villains, he saw the light and reformed, getting his GED and a degree from ESU whilst fighting on-campus racism, as most black men under the control of a white-dominated editorial staff is prone to do.
