If you’re a regular reader then you might know that I’m not one for annuals. Typically they aren’t worth the paper their printed on, but every once in a while an annual will surprise you, especially if the annual is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Extra! Is an annual in every sense of the word except that it might come out more often than that. What’s cool about it is it takes care of something that had begun to concern me in the book. Eddie Brock has come a long way from the McFarlane days, and I thought he kind of came full circle during New Ways to Die. I was concerned that he would become a villain once again once Spider-Man made the connection that Martin Li was Mr. Negative. Instead Dan Slott took it in a different direction and let Brock make that revelation.

This development makes the future wide open for Brock and Spider-Man and adds to the stories overall complexity. While the Anti-Venom is a silly name the concept is cool and I hope that Marvel sticks with the idea for a while.

The second half of the book is a story that X-Men fans are sure to love. Zeb Wells helps a certain adamantium laced Canadian celebrate a very special day. The story really drives home what makes people like Spider-Man tick, and hard their lives are due to the choices they make. It also says a lot about Wolverine and the kind of man he is. This is also an Avengers story in a lot of ways so fans should keep that in mind.

I had a lot of fun reading both stories and didn’t at all feel like my time was wasted. Fans of the three times monthly series should seriously consider adding this book to your pull service.
