Marvel's War of Kings: Round Up

A list of some of the players involved.

While Dark Reign is the major event sweeping through Marvel this year I’m just as excited about the next big space adventure to hit Marvel as well. That adventure is called War of Kings, and while I don’t know all the details I can share with you a few things and of course a little wild speculation about the future.
So, in no particular order we’re going to look at some of the different characters and groups that are tied to this massive story arc.

Nova

Nova has gone from being a relative small fry to one of Marvels heavy hitters, especially when it comes to outer space. Right now he’s still on Earth but as his book picks up look for him to make a return to a more Galactic setting. Since he has ties to so many characters involved with War of Kings it’s not hard to imagine that he will factor into the coming conflict.

Wild Speculation:
Look for Nova to lead the new Nova Corps into the fight at some point. Blastaar wants to attack earth, and Gabriel Summers is also a threat that the Nova Corps might be called in to deal with eventually.

Alex Summers

The prisoner of Emperor Vulcan, Havok is in a bad way right now. His plan to save the Shiar Empire from his brother has hit a bit of a snag as he and the rest of the Starjammers are Gabriel’s prisoners. Lorna and Phoenix, along with Lilandra and Korvus are attempting to free them from capture.

Wild Speculation: I think Alex will eventually be the one to stop Vulcan. The two brothers hate each other because Gabriel killed their father in cold blood. The big question on my mind is how he will do it, and with whose help?

Guardians of the Galaxy

As it stands right now the team is relatively unaware of what’s going on in War of Kings. They’re a little busy dealing with the mystery surrounding Vance Astro, Starhawk, and the Badoon. However, their leader is knee deep in trouble with Blastaar.

Wild Speculation: It’s crisis’ like this that bring teams together, look for Peter Quill to eventually get his team back on track in order to save the universe from guys like Blastaar.

The Nova Corps

The new Nova Corps should figure prominently in War of Kings thanks to Richard Rider. This is a brand new group of heroes that should come into their own in the next few months. Right now they’re still on earth helping with the aftermath of Secret Invasion, but after that it’s anybody’s guess.

Wild Speculation: Odds are against them getting their own book, but it would be cool to see them in a limited series or one shot. Hopefully at the very least they will be involved in some key battles for the fate of the galaxy.

Gabriel Summers

The third Summers kid was an interesting idea at first, but moving him out into space was a master stroke. He’s now the Emperor of the Shiar Empire and has plans to expand his empires territory. The only person standing in his way right now is Havok, but as I mentioned earlier he’s locked away in a cell. All that should change once Gabriel starts making waves across the universe.

Wild Speculation: Look for Gabriel and Blastaar to have beef at some point. Also throw in Ronan the Accuser for a three way grudge match. This series will be massive, and when the Inhumans get involved it’s going to blow the cover off of the whole thing.

The Imperial Guard

The Guard follows orders, it’s as simple as that. Right now their leader is Vulcan so they are forced to do his bidding. Gladiator and the rest of the Guard are busy helping Vulcan to further the limits of his empire. They are tough customers and one of the keys to Gabriel staying in power.

Wild Speculation: I think Lilandra will eventually regain control of her empire, and with that the Imperial Guard. Before that they should be a part of quite a few knock down drag outs.

Deathbird

Empress Cal’syee Hermani is the wife of Gabriel Summers but you might know her better as Deathbird. She’s Lilandra evil sister and co-ruler of the Shiar Empire. Her dreams of galactic conquest have been realized to this point. She’s a wild card in all this as far as I’m concerned.

Wild Speculation: I really think that Deathbird’s days are numbered. Lilandra will have no choice but to finally deal with her sister in the aftermath of all this. Or, she and Vulcan somehow win and remain the heads of the Shiar which I don’t think is very likely.

Marvel Girl

Rachel Grey has been all over the Marvel map in recent years. Now she finds herself as a member of the Starjammers. She and Lorna Dane are attempting to free Havok from Vulcan but aren’t having much luck. She also has a developing relationship with Korvus.

Wild Speculation: I think that we’ll eventually see Marvel Girl and Korvus get together. Outside of that I think her role in the grand scheme of things will be relatively small. Or she’ll die.

Korvus Rook’Shir

All I know about this guy  is that he’s relatively new to the pages of Marvel Comics. The wielder of the Blade of the Phoenix, Korvus has one bad ass mofo. Because of his connection to the Phoenix force (the blade) he and Rachel have a very serious bond. Could that bond factor into the War of Kings? We’ll have to wait and see.

Wild Speculation: Like Rachel things could go either way for Korvus. With any luck see a new Starjammers book that will feature Korvus and others.

Lilandra

Former Empress of the Shiar, Lilandra has been stripped of her crown and branded as a traitor to be killed on sight. As if that weren’t bad enough The Starjammers are in the worst way right now and she represents their only hope.

Wild Speculation: See Deathbird

Star-Lord

Peter Quill is in all kinds of trouble after running into Ronan the Accuser. He was banished to the negative zone where he woke up to find himself at Blastaars mercy. His team is fractured and split down the middle and can be of no help to him at this point. To make matters worse Blastaar wants Star-Lord to aid him in an attack on earth.

Wild Speculation: Somehow Peter will be reunited with his team, but how is anybody’s guess. The Guardians of the Galaxy will come together for the final battle against the various players that are attempting to rend the galaxy asunder.

Blastaar

The last time I saw Blastaar he was helping the galaxy fight against the Phalanx. A lot has happened since then as Blastaar has relocated to the negative zone. He seems to have taken over the entire dimension and has his sights set on earth.

Wild Speculation: I think the Nova Corps will factor heavily in Blastaars attack on earth. Look for Nova to get into a huge battle with Blastaar with Peter Quill there to help.

Adam Warlock

Currently seeking out the Universal Church of Truth, Adam Warlock is a wild card in all of this. What he will find at the Church is anyone’s guess, even though I think he’ll find either the Magus or the Godess.

Wild Speculation: Adam discovers that the Universal Church of Truth has brought the Magus back to life and that will be the real threat behind the War of Kings

Well folks, that’s it for our look at War of Kings, hopefully this column will get you good and ready for this awesome series. Plus don’t forget that the Inhumans also factor into this story as well, so all you Black Bolt fans had better get ready for action!
