Is Push ready for the big screen?

So I just finished reading the first two issues of Wildstorm’s new comic Push along with the info that it’s going to be a major motion picture sometime next year. To be honest I have mixed feelings about this film and comic book combo thing but that would be unfair to this project.

Push is about a secret government organization called the Division and its premier agent Ezra Lowe. Lowe can shapeshift into whatever form he chooses and is the only one of his kind. There are an assortment of other agents with abilities that range from thought projection to telepathy and precognition. The agents fight to secure America in a new age of secret warfare. Things aren’t quite kosher at the Division and that’s where the story begins.

I like the characters and the overall premise of the story; I just worry about the execution. The abilities that the characters have seem fairly easy to pull off special effects wise so with the proper budget that shouldn’t be a problem. The movies premise is where I have my issues.

Ezra Lowe isn’t even mentioned in the synopsis on imdb.com which leads me to believe that the two stories will only be loosely related. That means that the jury is still out on whether the movie will be as good as the comic that seems to focus more on the Division than on the world outside its walls.

It doesn’t bug me too much that the comic is some sort of prequel to the movie, but I don’t honestly see the point of making a comic in the first place. Perhaps it’s unfair to pass judgment before the entire series finishes it’s six issue run so we’ll follow this series very closely. The movie has a cast in place which should tell us something about the film.

Dakota Fanning is the big star attached to the film and plays a young clairvoyant that is primarily on the run from the Division. Part of me can’t help but feel disappointed by the prospect of following Dakota Fanning around for two and half hours after reading this great comic. The comic is full of action and intrigue about shadow operatives and botched secret missions, but the movie sounds like a big chase scene.

What happens if the comic series covers more ground than the movie? That seems to be the case after reading the synopsis. The movie seems far more focused on one particular event where the comic is covering a lot of ground. I’ll tell ya one thing, it seems like the movie should have come out before the comic book series. That way the film is the standard and the book is just a bonus. As it stands right now the book is going to set up expectations that the film won’t be able to live up to.

Perhaps I’ve become jaded because I’ve seen one too many bad comic book movies and not enough good ones. But I will admit that Chris Evans looks good in the lead role and the special effects do look good. In fact, the whole cast looks good, but it is a giant chase movie which is bad. It’s like I said, this whole project works better if the book comes out after the film instead of before.

Is this the future of our comic book projects? Is everything that hits print doing so with the intent of making a movie? What does this mean for Hollywood? I pose questions that I don’t have answers to in hopes that someone out there does. This is yet another movie added to the 75 we know about. The question this time is which came first, the book or the movie. We saw Wanted hit theaters and do well, we can only hope that Kick Ass does the same. Those movies took different avenues to get to their goals. Wanted didn’t take too much from the comic while Kick Ass looks frame for frame so far. Where will Push fall?

To be honest Push the comic has succeeded in piquing my curiosity about the film, unfortunately that curiosity is morbid as it stands right now. I hate to bash the movie before it even hits theaters but I just can’t help it. Watch the trailer and see what you think yourself, also check out Push the comic in it’s entirety before passing judgment, I could totally be wrong about this (even though I think I nailed this one).
