Hey guys, sorry we missed you last week for the comics of the week section. To make up for it, I've included a few books from last week that I thought you might be interested in (marked by a *). With so many big stories coming out of the major's lately, the list this week is filled with tie-ins' and limited series. This is a great time to get into comics, so hopefully this list will inspire you to get out to your local shop and read a book or two.

Booster Gold #2*

Writers: Geoff Johns & Jeff Katz
Pencils: Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund
Publisher: DC
Cover Price: $2.99 (release date 9/12/07)

Ever since 52, Booster Gold has been the man of the hour. It looks like DC is going to use Booster to finally nail down every single inconsistency in the DCU’s history. The idea of using a character as an editorial fixer upper is a brilliant one, and the results so far are exciting. Look to this series to get really good during the Final Crisis event (at least that’s what I’m guessing), after that? It’s hard to say.

Nova #6*

Writers: Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
Pencils: Sean Chen & Brian Denham
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $2.99 (release date: 9/12/07)

Annihilation: Conquest looks like it might suffer the same fate as its predecessor, being over shadowed by a more mainstream series. The last time around Annihilation took a back seat to the Civil War series, and unless the timing is off, the Skrull Invasion crossover will likely spoil the fun for Conquest. That is if you aren’t reading this right now, you my friend have no excuse not to pick up this Nova book along with the rest of the Conquest books. That way you’ll be ready for Conquest when it hits big in a little while.

The Highwaymen #4

Writers: Marc Bernardin & Adam Freeman
Pencils: Lee Garbett
Publisher: Wildstorm/DC
Cover Price: $2.99

I wondered to myself if naming your main character McQueen was like cheating in a way. But when you read The Highwaymen, the name is just plain cool. A story about two men who were heroes in their heyday back for one last ride. The history behind the main characters as its related through the story makes for great reading, and the artwork is not half bad either (just kidding, it’s really good). Put it this way, your only four issue’s in, plenty of time to get caught up on what you missed without breaking the bank, and this high adventure story is well worth it.

Ultimate Power #7

Writers: Jeph Loeb
Pencils: Greg Land
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $2.99

The Ultimate universe is due for a shakeup according to Jeph Loeb, but before that happens he’s been spinning quite the tale in a book series titled Ultimate Power. I know, I know the series is in its seventh month, but I managed to find every back issue, so I’m betting you can too. The reason I think you should get this book is primarily to give you a little Ultimates fix until part three comes to shelves. The story is great, definitely worth checking out.

Countdown To Mystery #1

Writer: Steve Gerber
Pencils: Justiniano
Publisher: DC
Cover Price: $3.99

Two reasons to pick up this title, it’s the follow up to events that took place in the Shadow Pact limited series. Secondly, Justiniano is a great great artist, his pencils make for great storytelling. This first issue in an eight part series features the return of a new Dr. Fate, plus a back story on the return of Eclipso. Not only that, but this is a direct tie in to Countdown, and get this, the info is relevant!

The Search For Ray Palmer #1*

Writer: Ron Marz
Pencils: Angel Unzueta
Publisher: DC
Cover Price: $2.99 (release date (9/12/07)

Another tie in to Countdown makes the comics of the week list, and just like the other title, a lot of relevant information is passed on to the reader. Despite the books very deliberate title, there is no issue limit on the cover. Odd’s are that was a typo or something and this book and it will only go for a limited time, or (and this is what I’m hoping) what your actually getting is a new book called Challengers From Beyond that I think will be really good for a while. Either way this book is a week old but still available in most shops.

World War Hulk #4

Writer: Greg Pak
Pencils: John Romita Jr.
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99

Here we are, at the fourth issue of World War Hulk. It’s weird, with so many comics involved in this series I feel like it’s been forever since this book came out. With everything being over shadowed by the Skrull invasion, its easy to forget about a certain rampaging monster bent on killing at least three people, maybe a lot more. The art is great, the story is solid, and I’m eager to read the finally as the Sentry finally goes toe to toe with the Big Green Mofo.

Penance: Relentless #1

Writer: Paul Jenkins
Pencils: Paul Gulacy
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99

Robbie Baldwin has gone through one of the creepiest transformations around, and that was just the beginning. Used as a foil for the events that set off the Civil War, Robbie as been pretty much bat sh*t crazy ever since. Even running into his old pal Nova didn’t help. Kidding aside, the reason you might want to check this series out is because it could potentially tie into some big reveals that took place in issues of Front Line a while back, dealing with the true culprits of the Stamford incident. Connections like these are what comics are about, so get this series.

Marvel Comics Presents #1

Writer(s): Multiple
Pencils: Multiple
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99

A return to the multi format style brings us Marvel Comics Presents (if I’m not mistaken, the original series is still in circulation as a little known title called Wolverine). This first issue features stories featuring Spider-Man, Vangaurd, Hellcat, Weapon Omega, and cool story featuring Ben Grimm. Some of the stories are ever greens (stories that don’t necessarily pertain to anything current, they could have happened anytime within 15 years of now), while a few of them are very relevant, like the Weapon Omega story, talk about unresolved issues. With books like these you never know what story will arise that will draw your attention in a completely new direction, the next great thing from Marvel might just come out of the pages of this series.

The Green Arrow/Black Canary Wedding Special

Writer: Judd Winik
Pencils: Amanda Conner
Publisher: DC
Cover Price: $3.99

Wedding books can be hit or miss, but this adventure looks promising. The difference between this and other weddings is (like Black Panther and Storm) both characters are heroes. The cops wife dynamic will be completely avoided so the story won’t become mired in a tired dynamic (looking at you Spider-Man) for the next twenty years or so. With all the big stuff happening in DC, it’s hard to say what will happen to the couple in the future, but I couldn’t imagine going through all this just to undo it in six months. However, stranger things have happened.
