This was a pretty good week for comics with plenty of great books from not only Marvel and DC but Dark Horse, and Indie label Viper Comics. So, here we are the books for 8/22/07
Amazing Spider-Man #543

Writer: J. Michael Straczynski
Art: Ron Garney
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
The end of the ‘Back in Black’ run for ASM. Aunt May is still on the brink, and Peter is forced to cross a line he never thought he would in order to see to her safety. This issue is a perfect intro to ‘One More Day’. Be sure to get caught with Spider-Man especially since ASM will be the title in just a short while.
Annihilation Conquest: Starlord #2 (of 4)

Writer: Keith Giffen
Art: Timothy Green II
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $2.99
Annihilation continues with this surprisingly solid limited series. Annihilation is probably the best space story Marvel has ever told, and Conquest looks to be just as good if not better. Be sure to keep up with this book, it will be worth it.
Astonishing X-Men #22

Writer: Joss Whedon
Art: Sean Cassaday
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $2.99
Astonishing X-Men has been the best x-title on the market since issue one. Joss Whedon has really focused on telling great character driven stories that have raised the bar for mainstream comic writing. Issue 22 will be considered a landmark title; I suggest you get it now in order to find out why.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #5

Writer: Joss Whedon
Art: Paul Lee
Publisher: Dark Horse
Cover Price: $ 2.99
I slept on the Buffy TV show when it first came out, then a good friend sat me down and played an episode or eight. The show was really good, and because of that Buffy fans aren’t hard to find these days (just visit a ‘Heroes’ message board) This latest book is a continuation of the show itself and is every bit as good. Maybe more so because Whedon’s vision for the character is more realized in this format.
Dead@17 #4
Writer: Josh Howard
Art: Josh Howard
Publisher: Viper Comics
Cover Price: $3.25
This is the first indie comic to hit the books of the week list, and to be honest we made a mistake (at least we think) this issue looked brand new on the shelf at our local shop, but the interior of the book suggested otherwise. I’m just gonna pretend that I’m a master of time and space and that Dead@17 #4 just came out this week. Nevertheless, this is a great book, and after reading Josh Howard’s take on the war between heaven and hell, I can’t wait until issue 5 (which may or may not be out already), just make sure that you check this book out.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #19

Writer: John Jackson Miller
Art: Bong Dazo
Publisher: Dark Horse
Cover Price: $2.99
Knights of the Old is one of several great Star Wars titles published by Dark Horse. Set thousands of years before the first Star Wars movies, this book is a great representation of the rich history that makes up the Star Wars expanded universe. This issue features a major turning point in the Mandalorian Wars and for the series itself.
Batman/Lobo #1 (of 2)

Writer: Sam Kieth
Art: Sam Kieth
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $5.99
Sam Kieth is back with his insane art style in tow for the first of a two part Batman/Lobo off world adventure. Keith is one of the biggest draws out there when it comes to Batman, so be sure to get this issue now before the cover price triples.
Green Lantern Corps. # 15

Writer: Dave Gibbons
Art: Pat Gleason
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
The Sinestro Corps war continues in GL corps #15 as the Lanterns fight to save Mogo the planet Lantern. Get this issue, get this series, it’s one of the best going, period.
JSA Classified #29

Writer: Arvid Nelson
Art: Alex Sanchez
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
A great series that helps readers get up close and personal with the various members of the DCU’s other premier team. This issue begins an arc that features none other than yet another of DC’s non powered super heroes, Mr. Terrific.
The Spirit #9

Writer: Darwyn Cooke
Art: Darwyn Cooke
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
Hands down, The Spirit is one of the most visually impressive comics on the market today. The re-telling of this classic tale is in its 9th issue and Cooke has readers on the edge of their seats. This story features the machinations of his latest foe El Morte, but ol’ Morte isn’t that new, is he?
