Comics of the Week: 8/15/07
Welcome back to our comics of the week feature. This week is more from Marvel and DC, hopefully next week we’ll be able to add a little diversity to our list, with that being said have a look at these great books, you should be able to find all of them at your local shop, and trust me, they’re worth it.

Writer: Ed Brubaker
Pencils: Steve Epting
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
The death of Captain America is still unresolved. That’s why the Falcon and Sharon Carter (Caps unwilling killer) are on the trail of the Winter Soldier, who has just discovered as important secret about the Red Skull, now all he has to do is survive until next issue. Iron Man and The Black Widow guest star in the book as well.
The Flash #231

Writer: Mark Waid
Pencils: Daniel Acuna
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
Wally West and his family have returned in a book drawn beautifully by Daniel Acuna and written by Flash alum Mark Waid. Since things are going the way they are over in the DCU, this book should be one to read, especially with two super-powered kids thrown into the mix. Wally West might be looking forward to a monster year, and if he is, it starts in this issue.

Writer: Daniel Way
Pencils: Steve Dillon
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
While this series is something that Marvel should be ashamed of, issue #16 is kinda cool as it revisits a classic Cap/Wolverine tale and adds a new twist. The original X-Men issue that was used, written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Jim Lee, is reprinted in the back of this issue along with a preview of an upcoming issue of the Wolverine regular ongoing series. Two and a half stories for 4 bucks isn’t bad at all.
The All New Atom #14

Writer: Gail Simone
Pencils: Mike Norton
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
Another Countdown tie-in that’s worth a look. Atom, Donna Troy, Jason Todd, and ‘Bob’ The Monitor have been the best part of Countdown for weeks as their search for ray Palmer has taken them to some very interesting places. If your following Countdown then this is an Important issue to pick up. A new villain is introduced to the story, or at least that’s what it appears to be.

Writer: Peter David
Pencils: Todd Nauck
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
This is artist Todd Nauck’s final issue true believers! On top of that this book starts the countdown to one of the biggest Spider-Man events ever. Get involved with the wall crawler now because big things are brewing. First up is ‘One More Day’, then after that, all the Spidey titles come back to ASM and will start hitting shelves three times a month. Start grabbing your Spider-Man back issue’s now. It’s going to be great.

Writers: Geoff Johns & Jeff Katz
Pencils: Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
DC put forth a great deal of effort towards bringing Booster Gold full circle. A character from DC’s more happy go lucky days, Booster didn’t seem to fit in with the direction DC was moving in (if he ever did), but it looks like Geoff Johns has found a place for Booster, and that’s smack dab in the middle of DC’s current crisis. Jump on board now, you might regret not doing so later.

Writers: Christopher Yost & Craig Kyle
Pencils: Skottie Young
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
The conclusion to ‘The Quest for Magik’ storyline is only part of the reason you should pick this book up. New X-Men had a lot to live up to considering that they are the current ‘teen’ team like X-Force and the New Mutants before them, and so far this a been a pretty good title. The search for Ilyanna Rasputin is a big deal because she would link this young team to their New Mutants predecessors (like Dani Moonstar did). Chapter 8 of ‘Endangered Species’ is also located at the back of this issue, that story is getting pretty interesting, you might want to check it out.

Writers: Paul Dini with Adam Beechen
Pencils: David Lopez, Keith Giffen
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
Countdown makes our list this week because something of note actually happened! The major players are all here this issue with the exception of History of the Multiverse. I know, Countdown has been anything but good in recent weeks, but think about this… we know what Countdown is counting down to, and this issue starts to shed some light on it. Check it yo!!

Writer: Peter David
Pencils: Pablo Raimondi
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
Another ‘Endangered Species’ tie-in that makes this book worth reading. Why? Because if the Scarlet Witch used magic to take all the mutants powers away, then what the hell is Beast doing? If you’re curious about this story then climb on board because it has been confirmed that it will roll into a larger series, be there to check it out.

Writer: Brad Meltzer
Pencils: Ed Benes
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
The final issue of Meltzer’s run on the book, this issue offers a cool look at the JLA both past and present, and leaves the stage set perfectly for the new creative team to hit the ground running. Ed Benes produces quality work, again proving that JLA is one of the best books out there. Big things are on the way for this book as well as JSA so keep reading.
Be on the lookout for Kingdom Come Superman to make an appearance in the pages of JSA, World War Hulk to progress, and for the Spider-Man books to show everyone how it’s done. See ya next week.
