Continuing our journey through the emotional spectrum on the way to Blackest Night #1, this week we take a look at the Orange Lantern Corps and their potential role in the upcoming DC event.
Emotion: Avarice
Home Planet: Okaara
Creation: Millions of years previous to the events in "Agent Orange" the Guardians made a deal with Larfleeze, the lone member of the Orange Lantern Corps, allowing him to be the keeper of the Orange Light if he would remain within the Vega System, of which the planet Okaara is a part. As the central emotion of the Orange Light is greed, Larfleeze enjoyed the thought of being all alone with his Power Battery. To protect their dealings, the Guardians made it illegal for any Green Lantern to enter the Vega System.
Key Players: Larfleeze
Powers/Weakness: As the nature of the Orange Light does not bode well for having multiple members, Larfleeze is able to create his own Corps constructs from his ring, using the entities of anybody that he has killed. Through stealing his victim's identities, he is able to wield a Corps of what could potentially be thousands, though in actuality he is really only one being, and the only member of the Orange Lantern Corps. The Orange Rings have also been shown to be able to drain the power of any rings surrounding it. However, the Orange Light has been shown to have very addictive traits, not unlike that of the One Ring from the Lord of the Rings series. Once the bearer is exposed to its power, it becomes increasingly more difficult for them to let it go. Thus far, the only color ring that has not been drained by the Orange Rings is Blue.
Potential Role in Blackest Night: As "Agent Orange" has gone on, I've found myself enjoying Larfleeze more and more, particularly as comic relief. He says some absurd things and it truly makes for some funny moments amidst all the death and destruction. More importantly, the Orange Light has shown it's effects on Hal Jordan, and in doing so has shown just how powerful it is. Compared to the other Corps, the Orange Lanterns are still relatively unknown in their motives, other than Larfleeze wanting to have everything he sees. Something to note is also that the Orange Power Battery appears to have a speaking voice, something that is not shared by the other Batteries. Geoff Johns has suggested that there is in fact a living entity within the Battery, perhaps one of the Five Inversions, and it will be interesting to see just how whatever it is plays into the events of Blackest Night.
