You heard it here - 2012's big Marvel event is Avengers vs. X-Men, and the seeds of that battle start in the four-issue miniseries entitled Avengers: X-Sanction, wherein Cable returns from the presumed dead and is on a mission to take out all the Avengers in 24 hours in order to save the future. Why are the Avengers a threat? We'll have to read to find out, but likely it involves the coming of the Phoenix Force and Cable's adopted daughter, Hope Summers.
“On the eve of the biggest Marvel event - maybe ever - Ed McGuinness and I are thrilled to be the lead-in for Avengers vs. X-Men,” said writer Jeph Loeb. “Hopefully, longtime fans and first time Cable, X-Men and Avengers readers will be excited by a story that can be read entirely on its own -- and at the same time has lots of stocking stuffer-esque surprises just in time for the holidays.”
