Back at WonderCon, when Marvel revealed the new-look Carol Danvers, the current Ms. Marvel and future Captain Marvel, she looked a little different than she does in this new preview of Captain Marvel #1, due out in July from writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Dexter Soy. Apparently, enough fans railed about the short-cropped haircut she was slated to get in this new role that they decided to belay that coiffure. While it's a little sad that we apparently obsess enough about a female character's hairstyle to make a difference, keeping the longer 'do (I'm assuming we're looking at hair clipped back and not some freaky '80s mullety thing) is a fine trade-off for getting this military veteran out of the outdated thong and thigh-high boot-and-swimsuit costume. Maybe now, Marvel can keep a female-led comic thriving.
They're light on the details so far, but Marvel says that Carol Danvers has "a new name, a new mission, and all the power she needs to make her life a living hell." Make of that what you will.
In the meantime, check out these preview pages from Captain Marvel #1.
