Resident Evil #1

Resident Evil #1 finally hit my desk and I must admit I’m intrigued. Fans of the videogame series should get themselves a copy because it enhances those stories. The first issue drops you right into the action and doesn’t let up until the first issue is over.

The BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) are the security agency that takes center stage in the first issue, they have agents all over the world dealing with various outbreaks of the T-Virus. Those familiar with the games know that the T-Virus is the catalyst for the emergence of zombie like monsters that are as awful as they are ugly. The BSAA combats these creatures wherever they might find them.

In this issue they find them in outer space and a place called Grezbekistan. Agent Gere is our heroine in space, she’s a very capable female character that is interesting enough to carry a book by herself, but just for good measure they throw in Holiday Sugarman a veteran mercenary for good measure. Sugarman (great name by the way) is stuck in Grezbekistan where his entire team is completely wiped out by even more monsters.

The only thing the book is missing is a real sense of suspense. I can’t put my finger on it but the book is missing some of the fear factor. There is plenty of action, and the monsters are freaky looking but for some reason I feel like the book could be even more unsettling as far as the monsters go. I did like the feeling I got following Agent Gere through the ship though, you get a feeling that she could die at any second and that’s good.

Despite the idea that the book could be scarier, it’s an excellent start to the limited series that will lead into Resident Evil 5. The art work is really good and the characters are interesting so far, a great start for the series indeed.
