Superman turns his back on humanity?

The thing that bugs me about New Krypton is how simple it all seems. The story seems a little obvious don’t you think? Superman pretends to be ‘down’ with the new Kryptonians and waits until General Zod plays his hand. Alura is blinded by grief but eventually comes to understand that Zod can’t be trusted and so on and so forth. That story seems like a bit of a yawner don’t you think?

Well, because it’s so obvious my spider sense is telling me that I’m in for a surprise. Where will the surprise come from I wonder? The first issue of the series is very unassuming, and follows along the path I thought it would. The Kryptonians are still getting used to their powers and so on. Actually I have a huge problem with this. It took Superman years to absorb enough sunlight to become super in the first place, the same should have been said for the Kryptonians, but that’s neither here nor there.

The book continues to explore social and political belief structures which is cool. I like Superman in this role, I think it’s important to use such an iconic character in this manner, lots of kids are reading this book and good to know that they are being given some food for thought as well as punches and kicks.

As I said before, the structure of the story seems way too rigid to warrant creating a new title to contain it. Something big is going to happen and I urge you to check this series out and see for yourself. Even if the book goes down predictable paths there still might be huge repercussions on earth which is interesting all by itself.

Ultimately I think that this is a bold step for DC to take Superman out of the mix for a while. Stay tuned as we report on New Krypton further down the line.
