Final Crisis #5

Just what the hell is going on here?

Man do I hate writing negative reviews, but dammit I can’t help this one. I’m five issues into Final Crisis and I’m stunned at how convoluted and just plain bizarre the story is. Because of the countless tie in issues that are floating around good luck reading the core series without them. Leave it to DC Comics to take your hard earned cash and just set that shit on fire, because that’s exactly the feeling I have reading this horrible mess of a comic.

We pick up with Hal Jordan in the shortest comic book trial to date. There’s some crap being said back and forth and suddenly the situation is rectified. I’m making it simpler than it really is but you see what I’m getting at. From what I can gather the evil gods of Apokolips have some how been reborn in the minds of everyday heroes and regular people alike. Turpin suddenly manifested as Darksied simply because that’s the way it is.

The heroes are up to their eye balls in other heroes that have been converted by the anti-life equation. This doesn’t actually take place in the series; I had to piece that all together by myself so if what I say is inaccurate blame DC for forcing me to spend way more money than anyone ever should just to get a damn story. Its books like this that have made event comics a four letter word amongst a lot of fans.

By the middle of the book it becomes clear that the New Gods have also been reborn in human hosts which makes me ask the obvious question: didn’t JMS all ready tell this story in the pages of Thor? I already thought that idea was weak at best, but this is just plain ridiculous. What was Countdown for in the first place? Why have Jim Starlin kill off the New Gods just to basically change their friggin’ costumes and bring them right back.

I can’t stress enough how disappointing this entire experience has been. This is easily the lowest point in DC Comics history. What’s really sad is that this is Grant freakin’ Morrison we’re talking about here, a great writer who seems to be hog tied by Dan Didio and the rest of the DC Bureaucracy. Batman R.I.P. is also on hold because of the crap that’s taking place in Final Crisis.

Here’s hoping that Final Crisis is a failed experiment that will go the way of the dodo soon. It’s unfair to loyal readers to break up such an important story with such a great tradition. Crisis on Infinite Earths is the greatest comic book story of all time (hands down, sue me) and this is how you treat this stories legacy?

Basically I feel like DC has been jerking my chain since the first issue of Countdown that looks so much worse than it was in retrospect. My big question is why? What did DC hope to accomplish by dichotomizing their big event in such a horrible way. It’s a slap in the face to readers to force them to pay so much for a story.

Final Crisis made the same mistake Infinite Crisis made by selling itself short. The first Crisis worked because it was a 12 issue maxi series that kept all the meat and potatoes in the core book. How hard is that to do Dan Didio? Final Crisis should be a 12 issue series with tie ins helping to keep track of ancillary characters and unimportant filler stuff while all the important events take place in one location, the core book. Just what the hell did Grant Morrison actually right since most of the major events take place in books other than Final Crisis?

Shame on you DC (wagging finger profusely) for the crap you're putting your loyal readers through.
