Invincible #53
Back into the swing of things.
This issue further explores Marks struggle to make his younger brother Oliver see reason concerning the two men he killed in last month’s issue. Oliver just doesn’t get it, which is awesome. They make the point that Oliver isn’t human at all (he’s half Vultrimite and half bug creature) and therefore can’t really relate to human culture. His advanced aging makes him very observant which frustrates Mark as he’s trying to make points about humankind and morality. Between the great dialogue and spot on artwork you can really feel marks frustration at the entire situation.
On top of his murderous younger brother Mark has got some slight relationship issues with his new girlfriend Atom Eve. They make an interesting couple, she really understands what Mark is going through even though she can’t always relate directly. As a super hero herself she has a unique perspective on Marks life and explains as much in dialogue. There is a part where she’s very reassuring to Mark and lets her insecurities show just a bit. Mark is so wrapped up in his own life that he’s having trouble noticing how much Eve cares about him, very involved indeed.
There is a bit of action in this issue on top of all the family and romantic issues. Mark has been going on patrol the old fashioned way since he ended his relationship with Cecil. While out on patrol he runs afoul of Titan, a guy he accidentally helped make a rise to power in the local underworld. Titan is attempting to break Multi-Paul out of the pokey when Invincible shows up to stop him. Unfortunately for Invincible nothing is as it seems as we find out that Titan is working for someone else and has problems of his own.
In the end it’s been another great issue of Invincible. This book has it all, great art, awesome action and plenty of plot development and intrigue. Mark Grayson is easily one of my favorite characters to follow and so far he’s never let me down. If you’re not reading Invincible then dammit, you should start!
