By Tyler Locke
Cable has taken on the responsibility of fatherhood and lets nothing stand in his way. In the newest installment of Cable volume 4, we find our hero jumping the timestream to the year 2043 where the world has plunged into a depression and ran by the Turnpike Authority who use fear and violence to control the population and keep the underprivileged out of the city. Cables duty is to preserve the life of the last mutant infant born since M-Day. He believes this mutant will prevent his dwindling race’s extinction. Former X-man Lucas Bishop has caught up with Cable and is trying to put an end to what he has seen as a horrific future by exterminating the messiah child.
In this issue, Cable straps the messiah child to his chest in a mechanical pod, which was what he should have been keeping the kid inside since he jumped through time. Sophie realizes Cable wont be the knight in shining armor she had been waiting for, so she decides to take the law into he own hands.
There is a really great panel of Bishop confronting the Turnpike Authority and asking, “who is in charge”. When the leader speaks up, he snaps his neck. He then asks, “Who is second in command”, another Turnpike Authority member steps forward and is brought to his knees when Bishop snaps his leg. Bishop then asks “Third?” and another member says, “You are, sir!”
The only issue I have with this book is how Cable escapes from Bishop. It was kind of Cheesy and we were lead to believe he had already tried it. Overall it was a good first story arc and I am excited to see what Duane Swierczynski brings us next.
