Skaar: Son of Hulk #1

Like Father, like son.

By Dante' Maddox
So we have the Hulk, not the red one, but the Green one. He ran amok on an alien world, and what do you know that rock star knocked up one of the locals.

Of all of the Marvel heroes out there, Hulk is the most unqualified to have a child. Nevertheless the big green stud did the nasty and now has a son, a bastard son. You see Hulk left the planet when his wife, who was pregnant with child, was killed. Because he left to take revenge on earth, the Hulk was unaware that his son lived.

While this book looks promising, there are a few issues I have with it. First, the birth sequence is just a little on the silly side, especially the idea that his first words are his name, as if he’s a pokemon or something. Secondly, what the hell is he made of anyway? The book skips ahead a full year which makes things a little confusing. Is all this taking place in the here and now, or is this the future? Why did Skaar grow up really fast? What the hell?

Despite those frustrations the story itself is pretty exciting, and has a good deal of potential. It will really come down to how he interacts with the rest of the Marvel universe (or how much he doesn’t). That’s the element that makes Son of Hulk so compelling. The book has a bit of a Conan feel, which is very promising, but there’s no way of knowing where this book wants to go.

Whether or not you read this book comes down to personal preference. The book looks good in terms of action and adventure, but might get lost in the shuffle since it doesn’t seem to exist within continuity. Ron Garney’s art is tremendous, which might be the difference maker when it’s all said and done. If you’re looking for something new to read and don’t feel like getting bogged down with continuity, give Skaar: Son of Hulk a try.
