![]() By Dante' Maddox | After waiting so patiently for so long for the big bad Secret Invasion to finally kick off, I’m more than a little disappointed with how everything is turning out. |
The first thing that really sticks in my craw concerning the story is how limited the Skrulls seem to be in their scope. The book talks a good game about infiltration, but we don’t really see it. What we do see is a lot of plotting and planning all so a handful of Skrulls can attack New York and only New York. How come they don’t attack the White House or the United Nations, is the world really going to lay down because New York falls? This marks the second time that Marvel hosted a ‘massive event’ that only seemed to occur in New York, it’s limited and kind of lame. It’s true that there is also a big fight in the Savage Land but that’s all really dumb as well.
The bigger kick in the ass has a lot to do with the Fifty State Initiative, what are all those guys doing? I understand that worldwide communications are down, but do you mean to tell me that there are only enough Skrull warriors for one attack? This has got to be one of the saddest invasions in the history of fiction. There should literally be Skrulls coming in all over the world who are, I don’t know, subjugating the planet? This is worse than Lex Luthor’s ‘Master plan’ in Superman Returns.
As if the really small scope of the story wasn’t bad enough, it looks like Tony Stark might end up being a Skrull afterall. Since this was only alluded to in the issue, odds are good that the Skrulls are just playing mind games with Iron Man, but it makes one wonder where the real Tony might be if this one turns out to be a Skrull. Just trying to figure out how all this could have happened gives me a headache, and while I appreciated the intrigue and mystery before, the fact that there isn’t really much behind the curtain is very disappointing.
I wish I could say that there was one cool thing about this issue but in truth all of it was confusing more than anything else. The tie-ins are supposed to help clear things up, but all they really do is muddy the water even more. I’m going to stick with it because Bendis’ track record demands that you never count him out, outside of that purchase this book at your own risk.
