The Death of the New Gods recap

By Dante’ Maddox
We were warned that the end of the fourth world was upon us, and I’m sure that some of us didn’t believe it. But, Jim Starlin did exactly that, he brought about the end of an era.

The Death of the New Gods was a very good series from beginning to end. The story featured Superman who had accompanied Scott Free to New Genesis only to watch helplessly as the new gods were killed one by one. As the mystery deepened Superman got closer and closer to the killer yet still had no real clue about what he was dealing with.

By the time Superman had anything figured out it was too late. Superman’s involvement was perfect because he acted as a barometer for how dire the situation was, especially in this final issue that actually reveals the killer. The New Gods worship a power called the Source. The story became increasingly complex when it became clear that the killer was in fact the Source itself.

Stuck on the sidelines Superman discovers that there is one last New God left standing to oppose the Source, of course it’s none other than Darkseid. What happens in the aftermath is actually covered in Countdown to Final Crisis #2. Superman witnesses the final work of the Source before he leaves for another plain of existence, to recombine New Genesis and Apokolips thus beginning the fifth world.

Combine the fifth world with the 9th age of magic and you get a DC Universe that is going in new directions and breathing new life into all their books. Look out for Starlin on Rann/Thanagar Holy War which will be out in May, it should be good. Also make sure your reading Countdown, Final Crisis is right around the corner.
