Countdown to Final Crisis 8 & 9

Two issues of Countdown for one Tuesday!

By Aaron Seaney

I am fully aware that we are just a little behind, and that Countdown 7 is due out in just a couple of days, but sometimes life happens, and we are here to get you all caught up in a single article. That’s right, we are going to just cram your brains full of comic greatness. So let’s get to it.

Issue 9 kicked us off with someone who is quickly becoming my favorite character. The Pied Piper has just gone through quite the fall, and he finds his captor lying unconscious, now when this guy wakes up he is pissed…and I mean pissed. He is no longer the nice guy promising God Hood, instead he is a crazed maniac who starts monologuing (like every good villain should) about how he has set up this entire ordeal, about how it was him who got the piper and trickster hooked together and yada yada, when suddenly one of the lovely robots shows up. He doesn’t however choose to absorb the piper as so much Knock him out and drag his ass along with the Karate Kid. Enter Red Robin, who sees this going down and decides it is his job to follow along and see what comes of it. This is when we meet up with Holly, Harley, Mary, and the Challengers who are searching far and wide for Red Robin. This however is when everything spikes, and it all goes down.

Suddenly the Piper, Karate Kid, and Red Robin are all in the room with brother eye, and Val turned Robot, and if this isn’t enough, after a quick couple moves from Jason Todd, Fire Storm is officially set free, and all the other major players end up showing up. So after a decent battle with the crazy Omac, we now have Jason Todd, Kyle Rayner, Mary Marvel, Holly Robinson, Harley Quinn, Donna Troy, Ray Palmer, Karate Kid, AND the Pied Piper all in the same room. So yeah, it’s about to go down. And just before it does, Pied Piper decides to blow it all up…literally. Care to know what happens in 8? Keep reading.

So countdown has the amazing ability to get you so enthralled with a story to the point you can’t even stand it, then in the very next issue, they just move on to other things. When 9 ended Pied Piper was literally taking down Apokoplips and brother eye with a crazy song. But when 8 starts, we see Ray Palmer chillin on what I like to call the “super hero chess board” where Darkseid and Solomon the Monitor are arguing over who has won. Just before we get to hear a lot of major planning though, Ray Palmer finds himself with Fire Storm and the rest of…well everyone and they are trying to save Karate Kid’s life. Now Ray understands the disease that the Kid is carrying and is trying to convince everyone that it is probably better that he die, for the sake of all mankind. Now not only are the all bickering over the fate of Karate Kid, but Jimmy Olsen has decided that the only way to get answers is to go and confront Darkseid (stupid not brave.) And so for quite a few pages, we get a huge bitch fest. Darkseid and Solomon at each other’s throats, the heroes arguing over Karate Kid and Jimmy, and then it all comes to a halt. Not just a halt, but a screaming halt.

Just before Darkseid gets to officially claim victory over all, Solomon has decided he hasn’t used up his last trump card. This trump involves him showing up and finally telling Jimmy Olsen that Darkseid has given him his new found powers, but he had also planned on killing Olsen and taking them from him in the end. Right after explaining all this, he uses his powers and relocates every single hero back to earth, which earth remains to be seen, but the fact is with Karate Kid still alive and diseased it doesn’t really matter what earth he’s at, it’s bad news for everyone. Make sure to check back, as Dante returns to give you guys all the juciy fill, as we approach the final seven weeks. I have a feeling it's gonna be good.
