Jim Massey and Robbi Rodriguez
This is my first real foray into Oni Press’ material (I’m not much of a Blunt Man and Chronic fan) and I must say I really enjoyed this issue of Maintenance. It’s funny and has a great deal of imagination. Oni Press seems to shine when it comics to diversity as far as genre is concerned, and this book is a fine example of very unique story telling that will have even the most hardcore traditionalist hooked.
The book stars two maintenance men (naturally) who appear to work at a laboratory chock full of crazy scientists. The first two scientists you meet are in engaged in a comic dialogue that is truly inspired, and the book just gets better. In issue 2 our luckless heroes Doug and Manny find themselves assisting a crazed scientist who has inherited a working time machine. The duo is inadvertently sent back into the past where they encounter cave men that look oddly like Captain Cave-Man. It goes without saying that chaos ensues as our heroes interact with their friends from the past.
The writing is quit witted and above all else hysterical. If you like dialogue, then look no further than this title. And the way things are laid out for the reader it is for certain that anything can happen in this book, and it probably will. The great writing is equally complimented by quality artwork.
Robbi Rodriguez’ art makes Jim Massey’s witty dialogue hit with perfect timing with consistency. From the great facial expressions to the perfectly descriptive mannerisms the book reads really well. That coupled with the fact that the book seems pretty episodic (which is a good idea for a comedy series) readers should find this book very accessible. So, here’s hoping you stop by your local shop and pick up an issue of Maintenance, you won’t be disappointed.
