While "Thor" has been generating most of the hype out of Marvel Studios, "Captain America" — Marvel's second film due later this year — is beginning to draw some attention to itself as well.
Over the weekend, a possible leak from Marvel revealed what appears to be the costume design for the Red Skull (via The Daily Blam). While the picture is not certified, it does match the art style of other costume designs for Thor and Captain America; which turned out to be accurate.
The Red Skull was created in the '40s soon after Captain America's debut and is considered to be his greatest adversary. In the original comics, the Red Skull was personally trained by Hitler himself to be a his right-hand man in the Nazi regime and a counterpart to Captain America. He has alternately been portrayed as wearing a Skull mask or with his face horribly disfigured to resemble his earlier masked appearance.
While it's not clear if the film's Red Skull will wear a mask or be facially scared, another picture has also emerged in the latest issue of SFX magazine (via Superhero Hype) of Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt, the Red Skull's alter ego.
And it should be noted that the Skull is holding what appears to be the Cosmic Cube, an object of enormous power which can actually reshape reality to the user's whims. In the "Captain America" movie, the Cosmic Cube will be called The Tesseract.
Chris Evans will star in the title role, opposite Weaving's Red Skull, with Haley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, Dominic Cooper Toby Jones and Neal McDonough rounding out the cast.
"Captain America: The First Avenger" will storm into theaters on July 22, 2011.
