Despite previous claims to the contrary, it appears that Sylvester Stallone is, in fact, directing The Expendables 2. So says Box Office Mojo, at any rate. Frankly, we don't know what to believe anymore. Black is white, up is down, and The Expendables 2 could be a remake of Enchanted April for all we know.
Naturally, we're okay with this. Stallone is a decent director, if not perhaps the most inspired in the history of cinema. His direction of the first Expendables was sure-handed and mostly free from the kind of choppily-edited nonsense most action movies have devolved into over the last few decades. He directs from the gut, Sylvester Stallone does, and if his gut is telling him to take the reins himself we're willing to trust him. But dude, how cool would it have been to cycle out some great action directors on that franchise? Walter Hill, Corey Yuen, John McTiernan... Stallone's decision to stay in the director's chair will give the series a sense of consistency, but could perhaps hinder its ability to remain fresh and exciting.
Or maybe it's just hunky-dory. We'll find out when The Expendables 2 hits theaters in 2012.
Crave Online will be back with more Expendables 2 news, especially if it's a little more pendable than the last couple updates have been.
