The producer of The Legend of Zelda franchise, Eiji Aonuma, wants to make the series his own now that he’s been passed the torch by Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto. While speaking with Game Informer, Aonuma said that he’s now thinking in terms of putting his own mark on the fabled franchise.
“I started working on the series not at the beginning but part-way through its history,” Aonuma explained. “I think because of that, early on I was more looking objectively at the series and how we could change small, individual elements within it, rather than looking at how the series should evolve.
“As time has passed – particularly in the last few years – I’ve started to think a lot more about how I can take the series and really make it my own Zelda and evolve it further. As Mr. Miyamoto has allowed me to take the reins on the Zelda series, ultimately that’s what I need to do.
“Perhaps some people will think it’s a little bit late for me to start thinking about that, but as time goes by, that’s becoming more of a theme in how I’m approaching the series.”
How does Aunoma plan to do that exactly? Well, for starters, he’s not ruling out the possibility of incorporating full voice work into the franchise, a topic that has been debated, heatedly I might add, by Zelda diehards for years now. However, it’s not simply a process of Nintendo slapping voices on these characters, patting themselves on the back, and moving on. Aunoma and the rest of the Zelda team want to make sure voice acting fits into the franchise seamlessly, a process they’re not quite comfortable with just yet.
“We’re continually looking at ways that we can evolve the series,” said Aunoma. “We’re not confident that we can find the right balance with full voice, so we’ll see.”
I, for one, would love to see voice acting introduced to Zelda. I got that point across roughly a week ago with my editorial about fixing The Legend of Zelda series. I’m also quite sure Aunoma could find other areas of the Zelda formula to update and evolve to make this series his own now that he’s in control. For instance, much of Skyward Sword feels like padding... Let’s get rid of that, shall we?
