Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson has taken to Twitter to express his desire for a follow-up to Tim Schafer and Double Fine’s incredible mind-bender, Psychonauts. Persson isn’t the first person in the world to express his need for a Psychonauts 2 (we’ve done it many a times already), but he the first, as far as we know, that’s willing to fund the project outright.
On Twitter, Persson gave a shout out to Double Fine boss Tim Schafer, saying “Let's make Psychonauts 2 happen." Shortly thereafter, Notch clarified with "I'm serious."
This is by no means a confirmation that a Psychonauts 2 will be happening. Even with the incredibly large bankroll of Mr. Persson, tackling a Psychonauts follow-up would go against the grain for Double Fine, a studio that in recent years has branched out into smaller teams to work on smaller, downloadable efforts. We assume working on Psychonauts 2 would require the entire Double Fine team, or at least most of it, to come together again and work as a collective hivemind through telepathy... or some other super mind ability.
But consider our fingers crossed as tightly as they’ll go. We would love to see a Psychonauts 2, and with Persson potentially funding the project, we imagine Tim Schafer and Double Fine would have the creative freedom required to make the sequel a memorable one.
