Wayne Rooney has spoken of Manchester United's chances of lifting the Champions League trophy, saying that he feels his club has just as good a chance of winning the European Cup as Spanish titans Real Madrid and Barcelona, thanks in no small way to the talent of Robin Van Persie.
Speaking of his teammate, who United manager Alex Ferguson controversially lured away from Arsenal just before the beginning of the season, Rooney said: “When you look at all the teams who have won this competition, they all have had those individuals who can do a bit of magic and win the competition. Robin is like that for us. He’s great for the whole team, he’s our talisman.
“We’ve got as good a chance as anyone. I think we’ve got the players. We’re good as a team, but we’ve also got some great individual players who can win games for us.”
Van Persie was snatched by the Red Devils for £24million and has not disappointed since his transfer, swiftly becoming the top scorer in the Premier League. However, Rooney has shown no signs of jealousy over the Dutchman's rapid ascension, stating that the striker is a great asset to the squad.
"He’s obviously a great finisher", said Rooney. "He’s a fantastic player and he’s a great lad to have around the squad.
“He has a calmness about him, he holds the ball up well and brings players into play. We have to try and get players around him. If you can get players around him and players feeding off him, it’s great for us all.”
Man United are already definitely going through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, leading in Group H with 12 points compared to Galatasaray's 4. They face Galatasaray on November 20th in their penultimate qualifying fixture.
