The 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations Are In!

Javier Bardem gets nominated for Skyfall, and Zero Dark Thirty's Oscar chances get knocked down a peg.

Zero Dark Thirty may have been sweeping the various critics awards this Oscar season, but for the most part, critics don't actually vote for the Oscars. Do you know who does vote the Oscars? The guilds. So with the Screen Actor's Guild announcing the nominees for their 19th annual awards ceremony today, we're taking an extra special close look at who their lauding for their work in 2012. And sure enough, Zero Dark Thirty only earned one nomination, for Jessica Chastain in the Best Actress category. Zero Dark Thirty failed to earn a nomination for any of the other categories, including Best Ensemble Cast, the Guild's equivalent of a "Best Picture" award.

Does this mean Zero Dark Thirty won't have a chance at the Oscars? Possibly not. Zero Dark Thirty has a lot of actors in it, but for the most part it's a one-woman show. Most of the ensemble cast only has a couple of scenes to their credit, if that, so SAG members might simply have focused their attentions on Chastain. Still, SAG has more Academy members than any other guild, so their choices for the best performances of the year often have a major impact on who actually gets nominated, not that they usually line up perfectly. And one performance they singled out, surprising many, was Javier Bardem in Skyfall

Bardem, who earned rave reviews for the latest James Bond movie, wasn't given much attention by Oscar progonsticators, but the actor previously won an Academy Award for playing another unforgettable villain in The Coen Bros.' No Country for Old Men. And an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor in a major action movie isn't a stretch either: Heath Ledger earned a posthumous Oscar in the category for The Dark Knight, playing the supervillain The Joker. Skyfall was considered a shoe-in for Best Original Song and Best Cinematography nominations, but now it seems like the Bond film might just be able to crack the above the line awards for the first time in Oscar history.

The rest of the SAG Award nominations for film are mostly in line with other year-end predictions. Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook led the pack with four nominations each, with Les Miserables trailing close behind with three. The other unexpected nominee was the comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which came out early in the year and managed to snag a nomination for Best Ensemble Cast and Best Supporting Actress for Dame Maggie Smith. Rounding out the Ensemble Cast category is Argo, Lincoln, Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook.
