Sony Wants to See ‘Salt 2’

'See Salt.' These are the jokes, people.

It took a little longer than usual, what with sequels getting green lit before the original movie even comes out these days, but it looks as if the 2010 Angeline Jolie action thriller Salt is about to pepper us with sequels. Pepper. You enjoy that. We're actually kind of excited about this news, since Salt really made our blood pressure rise. Because it was so thrilling, and also… salt.

Sony has hired Kurt Wimmer, the screenwriter of the original film, to draft a sequel to the hit movie, which grossed over $300 million worldwide. Salt starred Angelina Jolie as a CIA agent accused of being a Russian sleeper agent who goes off the reservation in what at first appears to be a traditional Hollywood race to prove her own innocence, but to its credit the film was a bit more surprising than that. We don't want to ruin anything for those who haven't seen it, but the film's script was a clever reversal of stand action movie cliches that ended with a strong, albeit obvious setup for a sequel.

Wimmer's pedigree as a screenwriter is pretty okay, with screenplays to the excellent Thomas Crown Affair remake and such forgettable fare as Street Kings and The Sphere under his belt. He's also famous for writing and directing the exceptional sci-fi action movie Equilibrium, and the exceptional awful sci-fi action movie Ultraviolet.

According to Deadline, Angelina Jolie is ready to jump on board Salt 2 provided it, you know, looks good. No word yet on whether Salt director Phillip Noyce has been approached to return.

Crave Online will return with more Salt news, condiments of Sony Pictures. (Yeah, that's a stretch.)
