It's Comicon week down in San Diego, so here's the best from Canada.

Although American artists tended to dominate the comic book world, there were (and still are) a huge number of Canadian comic book creators. With our own savvy heroes like Johnny Canuck and Canada Jack, these are the top 10 minds behind such iconic characters.

Joe Shuster
Probably the most famous Canadian comic book creator, Shuster is the one who helped co-create Superman with DC Comics. To honour the Toronto native, the Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards Association started the annual Joe Shuster Awards to celebrate Canadian comic artists.

Richard Comely
The co-creator of Captain Canuck, which first appeared in 1975, Comely published the last issue in 2004 after a successful near 30-year run.

Adrian Dingle
Pulling double-duty as a painter, comic book creator Dingle wrote the series Nelvana of the Northern Lights as well as Nils Grant, Private Investigator. He died in 1974.

Leo Bachle
Also known as Les Narker, Bachle is the name behind Dime Comic's Johnny Canuck, a character he created when he was just 14 years old.

Rand Holmes
Gaining notoriety through working with undergound comix, self-published/small press comic books, Rand hails from Edmonton, Alberta and was inducted into the Canadian Comic Book Creator Hall of Fame in 2005.

Dave Sim
A revolutionary artist, Sim is the name behind the popular comic book called Cerebus the Aardvark, which earned him a number of awards.

Gerald Lazare
A widely published and exhibited Canadian comic book creator, Lazare is not only a cartoonist but also an illustrator, teacher and fine artist.

Stanley Berneche
Born in Windsor, Berneche was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008. His resume varies from contributing to Fuddle Duddle to drawing the strip True Tales of the RCMP for the Canadian Boy Scout magazine "Trailblazers."

Ken Steacy
Ken Steacy decided at age 11 that he wanted to become a professional comic book artist, and he has quickly evolved into one of the country's best, with a prosperous 30-year career under his belt.

Dave Darrigo
With a long history of independent and self-publishing through his Special Studios imprint, Darrigo was also one of the original founders of the Joe Shuster Awards.
